Video: New AV cables tested

No sooner does MWeston have the goods delivered to his door, he begins deliverin’ ‘em to ours. This is the second TV out test broadcasted from north of the border, but the first to showcase the sweet snap-in action of a mass production cable. Hit the HQ button for maximum maxness, then celebrate with some (unrelated) 70’s metal.

What's this?
I’m dying.
I want my pandora =(.
I seriously can’t wait. I’ve been holding off playing sooo many games for this.
Buy a USB controller and download a PC emulator?
I already have both. But I have been holding off because I don’t want to have to start my games over on the pandora.
Nearly all emulators utilize the same format for a system, but I get it if you just prefer playing on a handheld. I’m the same way.
Oh really? I didn’t know that. I just didn’t bother looking into it because my main reason is for n64/ps1 and before emulation anyway. Might as well just wait.
But it’s been longer than I expected haha.
Yep, same here… I’ve been waiting to play many games (from classic consoles) since I pre-ordered. Currently, I’m only playing DS / PS2 games
.
Absolutely Awesome ………….
looks sharp
Very sharp of you to spot the TV was a Sharp.
Did look good, I’m going to have to place an order for one now.
Though I’m still concerned that again we see another OP and the screen is not attached properly. Is there a problem?
prototype cases are like that, not all the machining is done on them (since they are mostly to test for fit) so things like screw holes (its taped together) and the hinge don’t work like they will in the final
Confirmed: There will be no hinges on the final pandora
… i think … i think my dick just moved a little …
look good! keep up the good work
Can you turn the pandora screen off while in tv out mode? say you connect four usb controllers to play multiplayer on a big screen, any option for this to save the lcd screen?
It’s me, or there’s a small delay between the Pandora’s screen and the TV?
very strange indeed…
Most delay while starting the game.
I noticed it too. Hopefully the input lag from the TV.
Some Digital display’s will have a delay from different things. ADC, any post processing features on the TV (NR, enhancements, etc) and how the TV prepares the image will all be reason’s for a delay.
It may be hard to come by, but to really test for any delay, you should plug the video cables into a Standard CRT screen.
Most LCD tvs have a slight delay when receiving a feed like this that’s why it’s so difficult to play Guitar Hero on PS2 with an LCD because it doesnt have the calibration settings to sync up the timing that the PS3 or 360 versions have. The faster the response time of the TV the lower the delay.
You’re right, except response time doesn’t have much to do with hi-res screen delays – most response times are below 20ms, which is just slower than one 60Hz field. But hi-res screen can sometimes only show input three or four frames later than supplied – that’s down to various things it does to the signal before even trying to display it, like rescaling it. Modern LCDs are getting better at this, but early models were particularly bad at upscaling standard definition sources particularly promptly.
You might find your TV has a game mode – apparently as well as fiddling with the response time of the panel (via ‘overdrive’) this also can use a different, quicker but less accurate upscaler to get the input to the screen more quickly, which is just what you need to fill your power meter, or to make that split second counter.
Your not gonna be watching both at once anyway. Anyhow the delay is minimal and it wont make any difference. I’m not worried at all
Any one notice how awkward is was to read “in” and “out” on the audio cables in the dark recess behind the tele.
I think I’ll be taking a CD marker pen to the inputs on mine.
Yeah, I have an m-audio 1010lt sound card… so about 16 RCA cables kickin’ it back there. After a while I just went ahead and wrote the number of each output in big black sharpie letters and drew an arrow pointing out or in depending on if it’s an input or an output. I like pretty cables, but I like useful cables more. I will probably do the same to the Pandora. I’m a little surprised they used male RCA as audio in but it makes sense somewhat.
Awesome video. Hope that second batch doesn’t take too long.
too slow response for gaming IMO, good for watching movies or for all those occasions you will use the pandora as a comp.
I’m not sure what video you’re watching – but the delay looks to be less than one youtube-frame to me, so call that 2 frames. That sort of delay is pretty normal for SD inputs to a HD TV. If you plug a real Genesis/Mega Drive with a copy of EJ2 into that TV, you’ll probably get the same delay.
I dunno if its normal or not, I just say its too slow response for gaming. I also dunno about youtubes framerate but it must be more than 2 frames(if 60hz), Im sure, 2 frames is hardly noticeable. Still, no matter how it actually is, I dont think I can play many games(of course slowpaced and turnbased games is no problem) with that much delay.
Levi is just mentioning the amount of processing that most LCD’s do on SD.
There should be absolutely zero delay for the SD signal because it’s free from a hardware prospective.
Again, if you hooked this up to an old CRT, you wouldn’t see any delay.
Oh, okay, thanks for clearing that up.
I’m VERY pleased to see that there doesn’t seem to be any cropping like there is/was on the gp2x.
Looks very good!
But, Gruso, and the others. Are you only reporting the good news or are you gonna write about delays and such too?
If it’s news, we’ll report it. It helps if it comes with pretty pictures and videos, though.
I don’t know that (say) “there will be a possible 8-day delay” is worthy of its own post, but if the information is substantial and confirmed, you’ll see it here.
I have indeed been waiting for something more substantial. Looks like we have that now. New post incoming.
Yeah, like the case is finished.
