Message in a bottleneck

By way of preface, the term “bottleneck” should be taken as a bit of light-hearted melodrama, as it has on the forums in the past week. This stemmed from some questions about what will happen when the case moulds are done. Scenario: When the moulds are ready, 10,000 cases can (and will) be produced quickly. But at the moment, there are only about 100 boards to put in them. Boards take longer to make than cases… bottleneck! The obvious solution: Start making the boards sooner. The only obstacle: FCC/CE testing. Thankfully, this looks like one of those wide-necked bottles. Craig slams it down fast:

The boards are good so far, we are probably going to be starting mass production slightly earlier than mentioned in the last couple of weeks. Making those cases the bottleneck again ;)

Vorporeal then asked the FCC/CE question:

So I assume you guys are confident that no issues will arise in FCC/CE testing? I wouldn’t expect anything to come up, but if you’re confident enough to risk more than just the first 105 not passing certification, we should be in pretty good shape hardware wise.

Which was answered by EvilDragon:

We did some constant testings during development, not fully accurate, but if there had been something really bad, we would’ve seen it.

Also, I’m going to take a board with everything together for a preview testing. If a board emits something, it will be worse without a case, so if that test is fine without any problems, the final one will, too.

This is going to cost a bit more, but it definately speeds things up, as we don’t have to wait for the final case to start the mass production of all of the boards.

That last sentence in particular, is a bit of a winner.

  1. Damn gruso you are a witty fella.

I love this blog. I read the craigix on forums, not the ED part!

  2. That is good news! I have a question about a different bottleneck(It’s more a technical one than a production one.) Do we yet know the maximum sustained read & write speeds of the Pandora’s SDHC card slots?

    • It is thoroughly depressing that people keep posting and replying to this whiny bullsh*t that has infected the various Pandora message boards, and yet I ask a perfectly relevant, legitimate question and it is ignored.

      • My guess is that nobody knows because nobody has done a benchmark on that yet.

  3. I wonder what OP Team will do if something go wrong with that FCC/CE testing.
Apparently it’s not in the B plan.
So nothing really new : no cases no deal.
We are still near October though…

    • Hopefully if good practice has been followed in the design and production of the Pandora there won’t be a problem.

Ages ago ED did mention that the Pandora could as a last resort be sent as a kit and that is would get around the FCC/EC requirement. Apparently kits don’t require testing in this way.

      • But kit is shit.
Would you like your Iphone in kit for 350€ or finish in 2 months for 350€ too ?
I can’t believe it’s the same people developing the Pandora talking about kit release…

        • All of human existance is all about God creating an imperfect biological machine (Earth) to build the perfect non-biological portable handheld gaming device (The Pandora). How very Douglas Adams of him.

  4. Yay, more bullshit from craigix.

    • WAT?

      • He is refereeing to craigs earlier statements that wasn’t fully accurate i think

        • None of craigix’s statements are accurate
let’s just pretend he doesn’t exist and be patient with the small amounts of information that isn’t horse shit that mweston and ed give us

    • Yeah, seriously, WAT? This week has contained the most straight answers we’ve ever gotten out of Craigix in 10 months. Craigix did say “probably” which means it might not happen, but the follow up by EvilDragon pretty much says what I’ve been saying all along. If the boards are good, and you’re sure (within reason) the device will pass testing, just go for it for God’s sake.

      • yeah and I reckon those consoles didn’t get there by themselves either. Craig tells it like it is, or as it was at the time of utterance. Only thereafter his words mature into other stuff. I think it’s great to see just how wrong one man can be. :) Hey Craig don’t be sad, you can’t get it right all the time. Luckily the other two do so that averages things out nicely. Good team effort guys! Anyway keeps Gruso busy defending you as the need arises.

    • yeah craigix is just a bullshit machine ain’t he
like that time he fell off the roof. I could tell he didn’t really fall off the roof

      • I see what you did there ^_^

      • Hurr hurr hurr

  5. I am just glad someone is doing it, I know it is taking forfukinever but there is a really really good chance you will get a pandora if you want one. And think it is only two months from now :) ok but seriously It is obviously not going to be another 6 months uggg at least I hope not.
I am hoping at the latest 12/2009!

I think it is awesome that a bunch of people just got together and decided hell lets make something neat and it is really being done.

    • @Joe
“and it is really being done.”

      Is It?

      • ^ That little routine is getting boring, Gallos.

        • Almost as boring as the waiting. Almost.

          • They mostly come at night. Mostly.

      • But what is real anyway. I have a great idea for a film plot where it turns out we’re all living inside a computer and we’re plugged into it and even providing the power whilst in a comatose state.

@Gruso – Is it ok two mention the two months thing?

  6. Woot! Just 2 more months…

  7. The Pandora will be released just as soon as Jesus comes back..

    • Obviously, as god himself wants to collect the first official pandora.

      • God, Jesus and the holy spirit. Thats three Pandora’s sold right there!

  8. I know ’2-more-months’ but possibly a bottleneck: does craigix have enough(4000) boxes (cardboard ones) just in case he would have to ship the Pandora? Or it will be a surprise that his local Post Office™ does not have such quantities ready and waiting for his moves.

  9. Yes, craigix is a manure factory, but he is prolific. In that regard, I suppose that he qualifies this as a Green project. I ignore his attempts at informative posts and enjoy his videos.

  10. “Probably”, “Maybe”, “if everything is going fine”, “just a little more”, “patience”, “less than x days”, “before that month”, “near”.

    Yeah, whatsoever :)
“You’ll never know when you’ll get your Pandora !”
Is my new Motto and that is 100% accurate.

  11. this is getting so stupid, i refuse to comment.

and there i did something even more stupid.

stupid it is, none the less.

  12. Wait, when they say some absolute dates, and fail, because this is a development project, and they can’t foretell the future, then you complain. Now they take the risks into account (you know, words like ‘probably’) and you complain, too?

You just like to complain, huh?

  13. Complaining is one of the major things that took the western culture where it is today.

  14. it’s approximately 72 hours away from the first anniversary of me plonking down money for the Pandora

    • you’re right! this calls for celebration!

lets take on our black party-dresses.

  15. Ptin qu’est-ce qu’on s’ennuie ici punaise.
    Man this is so boring…

Any news about… anything except delays ?
Des news à propos de … n’importe-quoi sauf des délais ?

J’en ai plein le dos là, sérieux ça craint.
I’m fed up here, seriously sucks.

No attack to Gruso here ! Just 100% to OP Team

  16. if you put the money the paid for the pandora a year ago on a savings account, you would have made some cash. That’s what I did when I cancelled my order in january.
This project is a joke. It’s nearly 2010, this product is already old. Yes, yes, I know, there are game controls on the kboard. So what? This is just becoming an ugly piece of plastic running a cheap processor to play games from the 90′s. What a f**** revolution. For that price, I call it a rip off. Cancel your order while you can.

    • I’m no economist, but I guess the interest on a few hundred bucks would be enough for you to call someone who cares.

      • If you’re no economist, there you go: I made £102 since I cancelled.

        • Bank percentage seems pretty high in your country !

          Isn’t this the crises ?
I mean here in Belgium it’s near 1.5% of benefit.
You can wait years before reaching 100€ of interest from a 350€ machine (because of every fees around).

  17. when you know what you’re doing, it’s very easy to make money.

  18. MWeston said (regarding the Manual) over on GP32X:

“An operations manual is required for FCC testing so we will definitely be making one.”

    http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/topic/49721-instruction-manuel/page__st__75

I thought that since the manual is (also) not done yet, this snippet might be pertinent…….
