Official Blog: A pair of posts
October 7, 2009Two official blog posts from EvilDragon in the space of an hour? Unheard of!
Well, just some nice things you guys would like to know.
1. ALL parts (including the nubs) have arrived at the factory! For ALL 4000 Pandoras!
2. Chinese holidays are almost over, so the case should also be finished soon.
3. The Rev4 prototype Pandora is currently on the way to me so I can do the CE testing (gonna call the company today, I’ll let you know when testing will take place)
4. Softwarewise, we’re pulling all the patches we have together. The OS needs some more tweaking during the next months, but all the basic stuff does work and the image is pretty stable. I’ll do more videos when I get the prototype model.
That’s it for now. Short but good news, eh?

Just a quick update:
The holy gra… eeerm, the Pandora Rev4 Prototype just arrived here

Fab.
And now, a correction. As you should be aware by now, our Pandoras will be assembled in Texas, USA. This has lead to the misconception that Texas Instruments are assembling them. While TI have (obviously) been involved in the project, MWeston advises that it’s actually a different company in Texas doing the grunt work. Unfortunately, the bastion of copypasta you’re reading right now has had a hand in spreading the misconception. If you’ve been misled, confused or flat out told the wrong thing, please accept this sheepish apology.
OMG IN
Too bad. I still use a calculator made by TI some 20 years ago. But if the Pandora has the same quality and lifespan, who cares who makes it! Always nice to get updates, keep those doggies rolling.
A special apology to Asmo, who I did a special job of confusing a couple of blog entries back. Sorry Asmo!
Let’s not let my failures overshadow this nice news from ED though.
No apology necessary!
My eyebrow was raised by the ominous words ‘the next months’, and the continued absence of the bits and bobs (AC, Cases, CD, Manual – WiFi? FCC?) which although no doubt ‘minor’ give the impression that (large scale) shipping may not be quite as close as hoped.
I’m happy to be proven wrong on that though
“The next months” just means that OS tweaks will continue while we have our Pandoras. As they will for the life of the hardware.
I can’t speak for the other items you mention, but at least we know that they don’t stand in the way of actually making the consoles!
Dangerously close now – getting more excited by the minute!
OMG *less* than two months from now?
Geez, so close(time), but yet so far away(distance).
I twinged.
Getting closer and closer…I can’t wait for the Pandora to release! And not just for the tech itself, but rather, for the reaction of the community as a whole.
I feel as though that on that day, a great veil of anxiety will be lifted, and all the members of the Pandora cult will rejoice with such energy that it will be felt across the globe! The employees of OpenPandora Ltd. will breath a sigh of relief and satisfaction on a job well done.
And then, within the coming weeks, the forums will be barraged by a flood of happy and excited new Pandora owners with their tales to tell and their videos to share with the world! No levee on Earth will be able to stop it! And who would want to? – You know, besides the forum mods that have to clean up afterwards. ;P
And then Engadget will certainly have a review of a fully polished, fully finished Pandora, and all the nay-sayers and ‘vapor-talk’ spewers of the Interwebs will finally have to shut their traps and watch in awe as the product they said would never come to pass, has indeed passed. (And with flying colors!)
It will be a joyous time indeed. I eagerly await that fateful day. The day the prophecy is fulfilled. The day Pandora’s box is opened. The day every geek has his/her day.
A new age is dawning ladies and gentlemen! The Age…of the Pandora! ^_^
Just as a matter of interest – how many Pandora units will be sent to magagines / blogs / Gadget TV shows for review purposes?
I have a Calkulator from TI in Work, where is 21 Yeahrs old it is from 1988, and it work until now, and i dont think that the pandora lifes too short..
Great news, im happy..
Instead of hiding the apology under loads of would-be funny toppings, just state it plainly. It does not hurt you and makes you look less like trying to wiggle out of ‘we made a mistake, plain and simple’.
Verbosity is my bag. You know you love it.
We all love it.
“The holy gra… eeerm, the Pandora Rev4 Prototype just arrived here”
Pics or it didn’t happen.
Haha, my thoughts exactly.
“4. Softwarewise, we’re pulling all the patches we have together. The OS needs some more tweaking during the next months, but all the basic stuff does work and the image is pretty stable. I’ll do more videos when I get the prototype model.”
So that means Wi-Fi works?
Wifi has been “working” for a while. What was missing, last I heard, was a user friendly way of configuring it, which I assume means it can be setup manually from the command line, if you don’t mind doing so every time you want to connect. Sorry, no link; it’s buried in the forums somewhere, so take this with a grain of salt.
… I’d write something more explicit than the pause before my jubilant amazement, but I think I best not.
I’m not too phased about the manual, cd etc. the most important thing is getting this near-final prototype tested and give the OK to manufacturing.
My first computer was a TI99/4A, it was great in the early 80′s. It died in a sad wintery day before 20 years.
And Now for Something Completely Maybe Not So Much Different : PANDORA !
(I want it, I want it, I want it, and I want it now!)
Great News! Looking forward to getting my hands on one of these.
Good news and all….
However, is there a translation error or a missing word in the first bullet point?
It’s clearly not true as stated. Is it supposed to say …for all 4000 pandora *motherboards*”? or is it supposed to say “All *electrical* parts…” or something else?
I suspect it’s that first one but I don’t know.
Waiting for batch two is going to be tough especially once it’s released. I’d like to thank all of the re-preorder first batchers out there for keeping the faith…and keeping the project funded.
Great news! – Why ? => Because now we are sure that the nubs werent stolen while they were delievered! ..
Bad joke – but imagine this would really have happened ! the airplane with some necessary parts got hijacked .. => 3 more months => I’d have died …
Does this mean they will be shipped from Texas? or will they get assembled, shipped to europe, then shipped?
from what ive read if u live in usa it will ship direct to you from texas, everywhere else will go to eu the to you
That is fantastic, I work right down the road from TI.
As mentioned in the article, it’s actually not TI.
So if you live in the USA, the unit will be drop shipped to you? Where will all the accessories ship from? I ordered the extra battery, case, tv cable, etc…
Indeed, the logistics of this are a bit opaque – even the ‘included’ batteries, charger, stylii, manual and CD would have to be shipped to the factory to be packaged with them, never mind any additional items ordered. Will the factory be set up to sort through the myriad order configurations?
I’m personally OK getting my Pandora sooner, and the rest of the optional accessories in a separate shipment a bit later. Putting the other included bits (battery, stylus, manual) seems straightforward if they’re going through all the testing/assembly-line for it anyway. It’s just another few pieces.
Or, The OP team could premake boxes with the battery/manual/etc all inside already, and it’s just a open-insert pandora-close-ship.
Think of the additional post & packaging costs though, never mind keeping track of who has yet to receive what.
You’re right that shipping would add up, but it’s also an expense to send them to the factory to box up/etc – they might charge extra for that.
Keeping track of it is easy:
Sent pandora: yes/no
Sent others: yes/no
Great news to wake up to!
Sh*t – I’m actually thinking of NOT posting “Just 2 more months now”. What is the world coming to? Will I have my p&|a by November? Will my wife shake her head as I bring home a new toy? Only to be told that I actually paid for it over 12 months ago?
Oh the excitement of it all!
Woo hoo!
(Gruso – don’t apologize we still love you)
Oh my golly golly gosh !!!
Yay, another small step forward. I cringe every time I load up the blog just lately incase there’s some problem which will cause a new delay. This has been a rollacoaster of a ride with this pre-order. I’m gonna give one HUGE sigh of relief when my pandora arrives. I think the pandora should come with free counselling to help with the nervous breakdowns I’ve suffered over these last months while waiting, lol
Hurrrrraaaayy!!
btw I didn’t had the impression TI was doing the assembly (lol)
Finally some good news.
I’m actually excited for once!
Two months +/- one month. How’s that for a statement.
CE testing is the only major risk to my eyes. Any news yet? If we get through that then there ain’t stopping us now.
Did I read tweaking for the next few months?
Software tweaking only, which will be done after the hardware is shipped to us.
Software updates can be sent out any time.
At this point in time, it would be nice to know just who’s going to be getting one of the 105. Was there a way to find out, like emailing OPSales?
No official word on that yet unfortunately.
