Silkscreening ahoy

Recently posted to MWeston’s Photobucket account were these renders of the planned labels to be printed onto the Pandora cases. Highlights include a snazzy “First Batch” text and a Pandora logo. Rear labels after the break.

First batch bit looks delicious!
I’ll expect the oven timer to go off in…Oh, two months or so…:D
I believe “First Edition” would be best though. Feels much more exclusive to me.
It’s a clam shell not a book.
Awsome , won’t be long now
haha love the “First Batch” kinda fits the community

I was about to say the same about the screen saying ‘Please Wait’
I can imagine in 100 years or so, this may be featured on the antiques road show. The ‘First batch’ text being looked at under a giant monocular and someone saying, “hmm, interesting, this is one of the very first Pandora ever released. I would say it would sell for £???”
“I would say that it would sell for 26 million pounds …. in two months time….”
I love how all the example screens say “Please wait…” It seems like an appropriate tag-line for the Pandora XP
Hate to sound overly worried but… has silk screening time been taken into effect for the cases?
The “first batch” label is a ugly
I would love to see it a little more design like the Pandora logo.
And you right this is soo “First biatch”.
I really like the idea but put that on the back please, it’s ugly.
‘First batch’ seems rather tacky and especially in that font. ‘Premiere Edition’ would be a bit classier (even if ‘Extended Wait Edition’ would be more accurate
. Also, I think it should be printed on the back or underside along with the serial numbers, etc., definitely not right on the front — at least not in that font. Might look okay if ‘Premiere Edition’ was in some sort of script, but there’s a really fine line between tacky and classy.
LOL, yeah, please, oh please put “Extended Wait Edition” on them. That would be very cool!
I agree. “Extended Wait Edition” would be super funny and appreciated. It would definitely fit the feelings around the first batch.
Someone start a poll. I’m definitely voting for “Extended Wait Edition”!
A poll would be superb if the silkscreens are not set in stone. Polling the community on the final exterior labeling would provide a nice note to end production on.
first batch sounds weird and not so special,
maybe Limited First Edition
A long time ago, I proposed putting Craiginator Edition on the first batch. Guess that wouldn’t fit.
“First batch” sounds much better to me. Better feeling of comunity, home made, etc.
“1st Edition” wouldn’t be accurate (it’s more about batches than editions really) and generally is synonyme of more bugs / untested material / rushed stuff.
So yeah, first batch sounds good. As for the font, the i is very courrier but not the rest so I wonder what font this might be. Anyway, it could have been much worse, like arial or neuropol or comic sans ms for example.
I think it’s more natural for this to either be on the top of the case when closed, underneath the Pandora logo for instance, or a bit more subtley placed near the serial number etc., underneath the battery.
Yup, whatever it says just put it under the pandora please
.
If it’s any where else, make it be carved in it or some fancy shit like that !
I think… who cares if it’s not the perfect words or the perfect font…
If we wanted to look snazzy we’d buy an iPhone and pose with it like we’re some IT genius… we just want a bad ass piece of kit and a little reminder that we got our hands on it first!
It’s not because we didn’t pay as much as Iphone (well… it’s not cheap either) that design isn’t important.
The font suck that’s all.
This is why we can’t have nice things.
I like that the screen says “please wait”.
Somehow that’s very appropriate.
The part where it says “Please wait” is pretty funny too.
Because it fits the Pandora.
I think I’d prefer ‘First Pancake’.
Seriously, what’s the deal with the ‘HOLD’ label? I guess I hadn’t really thought about this, but I figured that thing was just going to be power switch.
It looks like the power switch is a 3 position switch with ‘hold’ (presumably standby?) on the left and ‘off’ on the right maybe?
Maybe it’s to let us know that we have to press and hold…?
… You know, for people who haven’t used an electronic device since 1985?
I posted my thoughts about it on the board but does anyone here think the Pandora would look better without most of these labels?
If the labels offend thee, _______ over them.
a) Electrical Tape
b) Paint
Also, if the labels look a bit weird in the picture, remember that they are blown up A LOT. I think these will look a lot better at actual size.
Looking fine to me – and we’ve been calling the first batch, err, the first batch for a looong time now. No need to change the term to feel poncy IMHO – just plain speaking is the way to go. It’s got that “first batch” exclusivity, no need to add bows and ribbons. Those who care, will know.
It DOES however strike me as odd that it is in mixed case, while the “HOLD” (whatever THAT is supposed to mean) is in all upper case.
Personally, I think it would have looked the best if all of the labels were just etched in the mold and then they could have avoided a lot of the silk screening entirely. I suppose that would not have been as flexible in the long run, but I think it would have looked a lot more polished.
You can’t mold characters into the plastic when they are on different axis than the pull direction as the mold halves are separated omce injection and cool down is completed. Those little bits of metal that make the characters would have to rip through the top of the hinge as the part was forced out.
It is as drunken MWeston says.
yes it can be done but the moulds wold have a shorter lifetime
Given how long it’s taken to make these molds, I’ hope we don’t do that.
You oughta make an account so we can find all the comments by the Pandora team on the blog. Also, you can have an avatar that’s not that yellow thing
for people who are confused with the hold button: its for when you have it in your pocket using it as a music player and don’t want any other buttons to be hit or volume changed
Uh-huh…okay, so how would the buttons be pressed when it’s in your pocket anyway? The screen would be down, covering all of the buttons. =/
Unless the console is open while it’s in your pocket, which, I’m pretty sure, is impossible.
The L and R buttons could be pressed (and I assume will be previous/next when in music player mode) and the volume wheel will be accessible (of course this will only lock if the volume is not a potentiometer)
Ya, Umm I would appreciate if that first batch label wasn’t there, maybe first edition as others recommended .
And I also think that font is not pretty…at all.
btw the other pandora 1st batch logo looks better the one with the 1 in it. (how come no one is commenting on that?)
the only thing wring with that one IMO is the number’s font, something more classy perhaps?
Guys, if you’re reading this…make sure you kern these. For instance, the “i” and “r”in “First” have too much space between them while the “B” and “a” in “Batch” have not enough. It’s hard for a font designer to get every single letter pair perfect so it’s up to the designer to do some kerning when need be. In Photoshop you put the cursor in between two letters, then hold Alt and hit the arrow keys.
Also, Bluetooth has a logo, it’s a rune that looks like a B. I believe it’s free to use if you register with Bluetooth SIG:
http://www.bluetooth.com/Bluetooth/SIG/Trademark/FAQ/
Also, if the chipset maker is licensed to use the logo, you might be in the clear to go ahead and use it on their behalf.
Here’s an idea how about we put the icons on the top part of the case like the Nintendo did to the DSi?
Ps. I just realized how generic looking most of the icons are….
Loving the “first batch”. Perfect wording else something like “Two months is so yesterday!”
