Aussie ace Adventus brings the noise NEON to N64! From the Youtube description:

This is a NEON optimised build of the graphics plugin gles2n64 paired with Ari64′s dynarec for mupen64plus running on an OpenPandora rev4 devboard. The board is at 850mhz and its rendering at 800×480 resolution with NO frameskip. It is 25 to 30 fps for the ingame sequences, the mario head is initially ~25fps but drops down to ~16fps after awhile. Sorry about the terrible quality.

More tech talk here.

[Update] Mweston has uploaded his own footage, with sound! He’s running the same version  of Mupen64plus, provided by Adventus.

Mupen64plus emulator running on a Pandora prototype unit.

The first part of the video is Super Mario 64 at 600MHz for more real life performance without overclocking. The second part is at 800MHz. Mariokart 64 is at 600MHz again but could use the speed boost.

The Y axis of the nubs is backwards in the software which made controlling Mario so much fun. :)

I take no credit for having coded any of this. That goes to some amazing software folks who provide me with the pleasure of testing beta code. ;)

  1. WOOHOO!
Always knew fullspeed was coming, and here it is. This will be just another one of the Pandora’s _killer_ apps.

  2. This gameplay is AMAZING.

  3. Holy crapface, and this before launch even! Awesome work to everyone involved!

  4. Apparently this is with sound also. The only reason there isn’t sound to be heard is because it wasn’t hooked up to speakers. :-)

I haven’t changed the sound settings, so i presume its being computed as normal. It’s off because i don’t have speakers hooked up to my board.

  5. A lot more awesomeness from those working on the N64 emulation. I believe there’s a group of people working independently on it but sharing code – just amazing work.

  6. Hooray! I’m so happy to see this. If I can get a pandora, this lovely dev is going to be getting a Christmas donation ;)

  7. There seems to be a bit of confusion about this, here is how the works divided:
Ari64 – New ARM dynarec for Mupen64Plus. By far the most significant bit.
Pickle – Tested releases / fixing bugs.
JayFoxRox – Making input plugin / Fixed a crucial bug in my code.
Me – Ported / optimised graphics plugin.

BTW i think there *might* be a better quality video coming so you can actually see the 800×480 awesomeness.

    • I love you all! :D

  8. Very , Very , Very AWSOME :) :) :)

  9. hmmm any one else remembering the good old days of n64 only possibly being possible, thats looking far more than possible :P , looking bloody good. Although i suppose there has been an extra year of software development so hey the wait has its bonuses

  10. I hope Ocarina of Time and Banjo-Kazooie play this well

  11. This is awesome work, and encouraging to see progress so quickly – i’d love to see Zelda in the next vid to see how it fares!

  12. Finally. Mobile Mario64 *sniff*

There is a god, after all, and she is smiling on us.

    • Been playing mobile Mario 64 for nearly 5 years. DS remember? I know the controls were a bit sucky but it was a damn good port!
Mario 64 does work VERY well as a portable game.

  13. Hurraaiiii!! Mario is oiled and lubbed and is fast like a slippery eel!! (i know… strange thoughts ^^)

  14. Here’s the better quality one:

    • this is so incredibly sexy, needs a feature in the article!

      • what’s the sound like? I haven’t got speakers as i’m at work

  15. I can’t believe this is running this fast already, and that at the full resolution of 800×480. I’m used to playing mario 64 on my DS and that’s only 256×192. can’t wait to play it on Pandora, I hope Zelda wil work too!!!

  16. all that’s left now is to get null dc running at decent speed!

  17. I rally can’t wait to play F Zero X, Goldeneye, Podracer and Mario Kart. Great work guys :)

  18. Will you be able to play at full speed and sound emulation without overcloacking the Pandora ?
I don’t really want to do this at all.
I thought that the pandora would be fast enough out-of-the-box.

    • I’m sure you will be able to in time. This is still in development ya know. ;)

    • Don’t worry, I’m certain that overclocking can be set automatically by the application. You don’t have to do anything extra, it will just use a little extra battery power.

  19. sorry to repeat the question, but what is the sound like in the second video? is it smooth? (i’m at work)

    • smooth + er

  20. FULL OF AWESOME!!!

  21. Just a question. That pandora MWeston was playing on I assume it’s the CNC case?

  22. @maddis first audio at 600Mhz is sync to the video so if video is jumping so is audio. Still its all pretty awesome!

OC 800Mhz is perfect! ^_^ almost better then the real deal. I do got a N64 with Z64 (Mr.Backup) ^_^

    • Yeay! thanks QazzaQY2K for the clarification.

  23. Pocket Silicon Valley could become a reality.

  24. That mario head is the stuff of nightmares!
