Retro Pandora makeovers we wish were real

News this isn’t, but gosh, it just had to be shared. Asmo, fellow Pandorian and frequent blog commenter, has produced a series of retro themed Pandora makeovers paying homage to the greatest home computers of the 80s (and their boisterous advertisements). If at least one of these images doesn’t melt your heart, you’re doing it wrong. Asmo’s work along with many other er, creations can be found in the aptly titled thread “I think I’ve went insane“. Case modders, are you taking notes?

  1. no amiga?

btw, love the panstrad! Sure wish more keyboards would look like that today. Closest one get is probably the thinkpad keyboards…

  2. :-D

  3. I wish, too!
The Pantari please or if you have something looks like the Sharp-MZ-700.

  4. Those are nuts, but the Spectrum stripes should be really easy for someone to knock up a little sticker for the corner of our Pandoras. That would be nice.

They should come in the box like Apple include stickers for their stuff.

I’d go for the Commodore colour bars under the screen.

  5. I don’t think the pandora looks too good with any of those..

    • I agree, but they are well-done make-overs. :) Props to the artist.

  6. The Panclair. Yes! That is what it should look like

  7. A NES themed one would be pretty sweet too.

  8. I like the P64 one since it almost lookes NES-like with all those different shades of beige :)

But seriously, I’d pay for a new case and keymat if they made them like that.

  9. 10 PRINT “Coming soon!
    20 WAIT 2
    30 GOTO 10

    • change line 20 to WAIT 2*31*24*60*60

    • 10 LET A=INT RND(2)
      20 IF A=1 THEN PRINT “/”;
      30 IF A=2 THEN PRINT “\”;
      40 GOTO 10

    • syntax error in line 10.
Other wise my version appears to be working but I won’t be sure until after Christmas.

      • Well I just tested it on an emu using BBC Model B Basic and it should work fine. Try a different version of basic.

        • All it does is print a nice, simple random maze scrolling down the screen.

      • Sorry m8. I didn’t know you were referring to ashdjones post.

  10. I can’t wait to play with the Pantendora 64. Kick ass with the Super Pario Brothers.

  11. This is great – having owned 3 out of the 5 of those (yes, when they were new, yes, I am that old) I laughed, I cried, I laughed some more.

    Much kudos to Asmo.

Of course this has absolutely nothing to do with anything important – but it helps fill these two months we’re waiting…

    Thanks Asmo!

  12. “If at least one of these images doesn’t melt your heart, you’re doing it wrong.”

Or you’re simply too young to understand (like me). A mere 19 years on one’s ass leaves you wanting a PandoraStation3 :*(

    • take 50 usd and go do some garage sales, y’ll have 3 or 4 of those to play with. No need for stink’n high res when you have sound of a fastloader on a C64 :)

      • Not to mention some of the best game music ever made.

    • I’m 17 and I would kill to get that Panstrad.

  13. Brilliant :) Would love to see Amiga an ST versions!

  14. I would pay for a c64 or atari skin….

  15. Where’s the PI-99/4A, with brushed aluminum and floating Bill Cosby head endorsement? I need some Parsec and Blasto on the go!

  16. Pantari…OMG I would stop at nothing to get that mod done if I had the ability. The only thing missing is a real working paddle controller, hopefully someone will figure out how to interface one with the Pandora, then I will truly be happy.

  17. Aside from the fact that the Acorn one needs darker less glossy keys… how triffic are these???

  18. Oooh, Parsec! YEAH!

  19. :)

I’ll have a few more as I find the time!

    • The “Acorn” one would benefit from a few tweaks – for example, the Acorn cases tended to be slightly “bobbly” – not smooth so much as pebble-dashed with teeny tiny pebbles. Capture that look and replace the darker beige with the same light beige or a dark brown/black and you should have it I reckon.

The Pamiga sounds like a good one too, and maybe a PanDragon32?

    • You already appear to have far too much time. :)

      • We all have far too much time on our hands until the machines arrive. More!

    • Oh and 800×600 in future please (for obvious reasons).
No rush you’ve got a couple of months.

  20. Oh know, look what you’ve done! When my pandora arrives now it’ll look really plain. I’ll have to mod it to look like the Pantari or the Panclair now. Not that I’d know how to go about it. Maybe this is your next job craig, pimp my pandora case. Asmo you have too much time on your hands. They all look sweet :)

  21. I think some of these skins are possible with UniqueSkins.
I used it for my NDSL, and I think they allow you to upload your own templates.
If you have the right dimensions that is….

  22. Never mind… they don’t do it anymore, but you can always spend a couple hundred dollars on ColorWare
    =P

  23. Because your monitor sucks?

  24. PLEASE GET SOME VINYL SKINS PRINTED UP =]

  25. Yay for mutant Acorn-Pandoras with red F-keys! I how feasible a Zazzle/Cafepress-like service for custom printing on Pandora cases would be, hypothetically…

  26. 40 % more beige! :) )
    Hmmm…I need my TI-99 4/(pandor)A

  27. I want the Atari styled Pandora :) Looks great.

  28. Nice artwork, can I have an Apple Pandora?

  29. What? No Texas Instruments?

I thought that with the TI cpu that would be the obvious choice!

  30. I love the Pantari. I would definately buy a decal of that design if it were available.

  31. I thought, a Pandora made of wood could feel smooth and warm in the hands, while playing Quake, so I made one:

    • Cool, but it reminds me of that cheap wood effect laminate you can get for kitchen worksurfaces or those silly old american wagons with that fake wood panneling on the side.

      • Of course it does! And it’s even less looking like real wood. I mean, I only had a black rendering-pic Pandora, wodding it. :)

      • A carved wood case with a good stain and varnish with brass ‘steampunk’ fittings and controls in a pocket-sized package…

I don’t know if it will happen to the “First Batch” Pandoras (since they’re going to get labeled as such), but I suspect that second and subsequent Pandora batches are going to be heavily case-modded, and it’ll be cool to see what people come up with.

  32. I understand that. There’s no way I could do any better. Got any more renders ?

  34. Same ST one, slight improvements:

  35. Where there’s a Pantari, there’s bound to be a Pannadore chasing it down to point out it’s superior audio facilities:

  36. Make the most of that long battery life:
