It’s tit for tat across the continents here, with EvilDragon showing off some window management in a second OS appetiser. There are no new cases in this video unfortunately (CNC is SO two days ago), but on screen is where the fun is anyway.

Woooooo!

Great minds think alike, eh?
3^ that
^ Always.
Awesome, looks very usable already. This is the feeling of excitement I was waiting for…glad I didn’t cancel my pre-order.
I like the windows 98 look. reminds me of the good ol days when we had beige computers, 4 processes running on the os, and had to install drivers for usb sticks. We even had solitaire and the “terminal” too. Now look, we have these new fangled handheld devices running powerful and free open source linux software combined with finger screens, yeti nipples, entertainment controls, qwerty keyboard panel, removable storage slots, all being run on a bettery.
gramps isn’t happy.
yes i am
That’s really really easy to fix. Just download a new theme, download one of the many GTK theme pickers out there, and set up a new GTK theme.
Basically, what you see is the default GTK interface. It won’t be too hard to change it.
i know i know, im just trolling.. =P
Great.
But I think showing the pmenu would have a better impact on people.
Ho, and using a gtk theme could be nice too…
Intresting but why did that usage with the stylus seem so ‘imprecise?’
ljones
The previous video showed him skipping over the calibration phase of the first-boot wizard, that might be it.
Anyone know whether or not having only one virtual desktop frees up RAM?
No, it doesn’t, though you have been clearly Windows-raised. Virtual desktop is, as the name suggests, virtual. You can set a hundred of them (yes, you can, I rarely use below 15 even on my quasi-light home computers and even my wife has her default 12 desktops always full) and all of them will be exactly that – virtual, showing only applications you placed there. There is absolutely nothing to gain by disabling them (especially memory-related), so don’t be a silly Windows user, please.
Also, get yourself something like Ubuntu or any other gtk/gnome/xfce employing Linux dstribution to get some idea on how Pandora will look/work.
Actually I’m an Ubuntu user (may explain it!), I’ve just never seen the subject raised anywhere.
It was a fair question from a non-Linux user, it doesn’t make him silly IMO. It always baffles me when the people who want the whole world to use Linux are hostile towards those who need to learn about it.
It seems to me that there’s an inherent difficulty in using the stylus given the Pandora’s clamshell design. That’s in part why I’ve not been very enthusiastic about touchscreen gaming on Pandora. There’s a reason why on the Nintendo DS, the touchscreen is on the bottom half of the unit and not the top. The inherent difficulty I’m thinking of is much made more apparent when someone is trying to make a video of the Pandora in use. But I think ultimately that it’s just a part of the design. If you’re holding it, which is likely, you’ll have to support the Pandora with one hand while using the stylus on an inclined, hinged surface.
I’m glad the touchscreen is there, but I suspect that, in the long run, a good mouse control set-up using the gaming controls will end up being far superior to the stylus in many circumstances. Using the gaming controls also means that you won’t have to move your hands, which is more efficient and more stable.
Does the mouse feeling with cursor will stay in later release of this OS ??
A true touch screen like the DS don’t act like the mouse cursor !
Double-tapping on such a high resolution screen in that position with a stylus is really an exercise in coordination — much more difficult than double-clicking a mouse. That’s why a lot of touchscreen interfaces go with single-touch selection instead. I would even go on to say, though, that using the touchscreen on the NDS is not worthwhile for most DS games, and that using the hardware controls is generally superior.
It’s hardly something to be concerned about, though. Pandora has almost every means of interfacing with a device in existence, including USB, Wifi, and Bluetooth for external devices. I have no doubt everyone will figure out a good way to use it.
Couldn’t agree more.
I’m sure that there will be interesting things to use the stylus for later on but touch screen will be my least used feature once the mouse and gaming controls are set up
Seems pretty nippy
ohhyeahhh!
The login screen is incredibly ugly !
yipiiiie.
But overall it’s cool !
Mass production as started
I wonder when the last Pandora will be ship ?
I thought it was ugly… but then I realized it makes so much sense, and it wasn’t ugly anymore.
A little “character” isn’t a bad thing anyway.
Looking closely at the video, it looks as if the callibration is slightly off. i hope there is a callibration option like on the F200.
Good thing ED is making these, they are much more convincing than “it is coming along, and it will be here soon” talk
New production case video up on MWeston’s Youtube page!

So close now! It looks like the Pandora will be one of those life’s pleasures that you must discover. Everything, since the beginning, has worked out so well, its amazing.
