Pics: Clamshell comparisons

Everybody’s talkin’ bout dat hinge. The fact that it didn’t appear in the final list of tweaks was a largely unacknowledged victory, but forget about that win – we’ve got locking angles to worry about! MWeston did some dangling and came up with this:
Hinge rotation comparison with NDS lite
Pandora’s hinge locks into place somewhere in between the two positions the DS has. The DS is in the first lock position in this picture. You can push the Pandora lid further back but it will spring back to this point and stay locked.
Thanks fischju2000 for the tip.
Seems a bit smaller than the new DSi LX/LL in comparison, and looks like an ever better product when you have the final next to a similiar form factor device. Very nice.
Yea it looks awesome
uber elite, makes the other look like a cheap piece of junk in comparison. Lots of beautiful little buttons!
I just bought a 2nd hand digital projector from a friend for au $100, which is about 1/11 what it used to cost new, a few years back. It works very fine and the native resolution is 854×480, very suitable for the Pandora’s 800×480! No scaling / blurring will be required! The projector is an Epson EMP-TW10H.
That’s a damn good deal Sam.
Wouldn’t mind one of them projectors myself you lucky sod
Wow, the pandora is going to be almost the same size as the DSI XL, isn’t it? Of course the resolution will be way better on the pandora. I’m not getting any younger and all this time in front of computer monitors is not making my eyes any better.
The DSi LL is a fair bit bigger again. I couldn’t get that sizeasy site to work, so I threw this together in CAD (since it was open anyway):

That’s with closed lids of course.
Cool. I’m not the only one who “worries” about eyesight
maybe you need to get a nice projector too, for the scaled-up pandora video wall
But isn’t a bigger resolution harder on the eyes?
I’ll never need it open that wide…150 degrees maybe, not 180.
The wider you can open it the less you have to hang your head for an optimal view. That means less neck strain.
Like a good member of the OpenPandora community, I have an unrelated nitpick now that I’ve seen some more pictures.
The Pandora screen appears lighter than the DS(i?) screen. While I’m hoping this is simply a gloss/angle issue, is it possible that this might limit the range of blacks to a much lighter value than some other screens?
Either way, the screen right now appears equivalent to other matte displays I’ve seen, and it’s certainly nothing that’s going to be changed at this point.
Cool comparison pictures!
The DS screen has an extra, shiny plastic, shield over it’s screens that makes it look that way. Underneath, it’s screen is just as dull. Still as a larger screen depending on the brightness it could look a little less exciting in somce conditions but the far higher resolution with quickly make up for it I suspect.
I am not sure i like how far back this angle is.
I also noticed in the video that he had to use his left hand to hold the screen to be able to apply enough pressure to use the stylus. This worries be because i dont plan on sitting at a table with both hands free when im using the thing, else i might as well be on a computer.
Crossing my fingers.
Well, the joystick(s) WILL be an option for the mouse (instead of tapping the touchscreen), right?
God, I hope so.
Notaz made a driver a long, long time ago that used the two nubs like this. One moved the mouse and the other scrolled. It was really cool except at that time the nub controller firmware was a mess and it was a bit erratic. That code needs to go back in now that the nubs work well as I would love that feature too.
That’s the plan AFAIK. Maybe not on day one, but improvements like this will flood in once the community gets their Pandoras.
I don’t think the ones in videos have hinges, if you look carefully you notice that it falls on its own if he doesn’t keep it up with his hand.
perfect. keep it up
Spot on. Cheers for all your hard work devs
Should be more like the DS, but it looks like it’s something I’m going to have to put up with.
The black on they keys is so massively different to the case, anyone notice that?
The keys are rubber with a hard clear plastic coating on them, so yes the will look very different.
Also, those cases do not have their final finish on them, so they will look different in full production anyway.
The keys will be glossy and the case will be matte black.
I actually like that two-tones-of-black effect
The keys should be high-contrast so you can see what’s written on them, the case should be a smooth “background” sort of black. Maybe the keys should not be too shiny, just dark black, for readability – but it sure looks good to me anyway.
I just had a terrorfying thought- what if the Pandora’s screen gets scratched as easily as the DS’s? I’ve created huge scars on my DS lite’s touch screen simply by using a stylus which had somehow ended up with a grain of sand on the end of it.
I mean, they both use the same touch-screen technology… is there any defense against scratches? For example, a tougher material or a cheap, easily-replaceable digitizer?
Speaking of all this, I hope someone makes screen protectors.
Archos 605 screen protectors should be a perfect fit, as it’s the same LCD. They’re pretty cheap and easy to find. You could get one now and fit it as soon as your Pandora arrives.
Thanks!
sounds like this would be a good “optional extra” to offer with the pandora, or not optional.
