Chances are that some time in the last year, you’ve sat a moment and pondered just how exciting it’s going to be your Pandora arrives. If we’ve learned anything today, it’s that the Pandora team themselves pretty much feel the same way. When Craig’s Pandora turned up today (fresh from MWeston’s microwave), he didn’t just start the kind of thread we all hope to post in soon, he stayed up until 5am to give us some video. Good show.

  1. Ok… This is the first of Craig’s videos I’ve seen.

Has he always sounded like a fourteen year old Harry Potter?

I realize he’s british – I’m not making fun of that. But he sounds about 1/3 the age I thought he was.

    • You’ll get used to it

      • lol :)

    • Craig actually is Harry Potter. You didn’t know that?

    • I said the same thing the first time I saw video of him. He seems way younger than one might think.

  2. The video is 4:20 minutes, i think a few person in this community will know what i mean, and what i’m about to do, to celebrate.

Man i got so many plans for this console.
*hopes will have some spare cash to get himself a big juicy SD card before he gets his pandora*

    • Mr Gonzo :D Hello.

      • OH HAI.
I am lurking in the dark, waiting for my time to come 8)

    • fascinatingly enough, the term originated at the high school one district over from the one I go to.

      • sexy

      • How old are you and you must be in California?

      • what’s the real meaning behind it then? I’ve heard a ridiculous amount of stories as to what it actually means (ranging from hitler’s birthday to police call number for possession)

    • 42. Yea. The answer to everything.

      • ^ +1000

  3. posting in epic thread.
SERIOUSLY, EXCITING! hope we can all do this too soon.

    • pandora on head

      • Pants down the best!

  4. That video was great. Reminds me of when I got my NES on Christmas many, many years ago.

  5. Video was a bit hectic but still made of pure win XD

Just a small question though… when Craig showed the bottom side of the Pandora, it might have been the lighting but isn’t there supposed to be an OpenPandora logo on there with some writing? I didn’t see it in the video.

    • You might be thinking of the battery case, which I believe is a separate little box. :)

  6. I don’t get it – this can’t be the first MP Pandoras, I bet it’s the same Pre-Production ones MWeston was showing earlier.

    • Yep, it’s one of the group that MWeston built.

  7. I’m still kinda anxious about the hinge. Will it be completely comfortable for playing while sitting/ half-laying; instead of upside-down using.

    • Don’t get unhinged over it ;)

      • lol I’m naming you the new master of mirth for that one :D

    • *boomtish*

Seriously though, the hinge appears to sit firmly at any angle, regardless of the lock position. What more could it do?

  8. was that a young Steve Jobs at the end there?

    • Exactly what I was thinking! I’ll let someone else come up with the clever connection, as I’m no good at that stuff.

      • Wow, I just googled and there is a weird resemblance.

  9. Nice zoomshots on the pandora.
    The keyboard/pad looks quite nice.

  10. Nothing like a craig video to help replenish my enthusiasm for the Pandora. I sooo wish they could of finished it for christmas, that would of been so awesome. Still atleast there’s something to look forward to after taking down the christmas decorations for another year. Thanks for the video craig. Looking forward to the other video you mentioned :)

    • You could always postpone Christmas until February, that way you’d get one early. Possibly.

  11. “THIS IS AN INVASION OF PRIVACY” lol caught eating noodles

i love your accent, it actually makes the videos better

  12. Thats it. I’m going to have to rob Craig blind. I wonder if they’ll let me keep his pandora in jail?!

  13. looks great, can’t wait! :)

  14. Nice one old boy.

  16. If you don’t mind the numb controller of the Pandora.
What do you think of the Sharp Netwalker ?

    http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/27/sharps-5-inch-pc-z1-netwalker-honors-the-zaurus-legacy/

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eW16GZPvBbs

I paid my Pandora 340€ with a TV-cable (ouch) and the price of the sharp is 330€ (480$ – I do have find some to 330€ free shipping to Europe).

What do you think of it in comparison ?

Would it be possible to have a video that try the same stuff ? Particularly open open-office excel (it’s very slow). I hope the Pandora is not so slow !?

    • The pandora with the best SD cards will be a little slow, a HDD can transfer 50MBps where the best SD slot speed will be 24MBps (there are supposedly 30MBps SD cards). This can’t be improved but if the OS is properly trimmed pandora will boot in under 10 seconds. That is not going to be an issue anyhow since people will probably only reboot once in a while… sleep mode.

As for the sharp it has built in flash that is probably slow so maybe putting the programs on the SD would speed it up to pandora speed?

As for open office it will probably be slow to start on the pandora. You can get excel viewers (maybe have to compile one) that should run much faster. But then you can’t edit. Unless you are going to become a developer and build custom tools you will have to use what is available or modify something that already exists to work better (recompile open office and remove anything that is not essential?). I am not worried about any of this since the community will improve pandora over time and I am mostly interested in games which will have been heavily optimized.

The other issue is the graphic chip… I didn’t figure out if it had a real 3d chip but who is going to make emulators for it? It might work with the emulators being made for pandora but probably not. So you get what ever unoptimized emulators that have been compiled to work with it? I am going to hold out and my pandora will be here soon enough :)

      • Careful with your MB and Mbs there – a good hard disc should easily be able to beat 50MBps, at least for sequential read/write. On the other hand, the fastest SD cards claim to write out at speeds of up to 80Mbps – but that’s Mbits, not MBytes so actually it’s something like 10MBps).

Still, that’s not bad. The SSD in my netbook doesn’t run at anything like that speed, yet it boots a full Ubuntu install in around 30s. With a decent SD card, the Pandora could feasibly be even faster.

    • The Sharp looks like a good little machine. It is a bit larger, not designed for gaming, and has slightly higher specs in most regards (ram, clock, built-in storage, screen). I like that the QWERTY row on the keyboard is (almost) as wide as it can be. The Pandora can potentially have more SD storage with its two SD slots. It’s good to see that they’re releasing it with Ubuntu. I like the looks of the Pandora better.

  17. Which one of these is mine :D

  18. OMG Craig middlefingered teh pandora!!! This must be a new tradition we must all follow!

    • I noticed that too – I think that’s meant for the people calling the Pandora vaporware.

  19. And I thought that my desk was a mess… ^^
