A second video for the day. We’ll let ED handle the blurb this time.

Well, there’s more than one video for you today. I just filmed another one which shows some closeups of the Pandora prototype and also demonstrates how well the keyboard and DPAD is working.

I dedicate this video to no_skill (aka oneup), one of the first community members of the gp32x.com boards. He was a very talented young man. Besides giving various nice games to the community like Spout or Super Mario War, he also has been known as a very nice and friendly guy, always helping where he could (that’s why he also achieved the GP Guru status at the boards).

It’s very sad he took his life yesterday. I think he would’ve loved the Pandora – as he did like the GP32 and the GP2X. I sincerely do hope he’s feeling better now – wherever he may be.

Our sincere condolences go out to no_skill’s family and friends. Rest in peace.

  1. Dpad looks like the biz, wouldn’t mind seeing what it would be like to use one of the analogs to control the mouse pointer. Seems like a good idea to me :-)

  2. zomg, its like a commercial, it makes me wanna buy two more pandoras.

  3. read the text and you gotta be kidding me, right?

    • Good news +1
      Sad news +100^999E

  4. can the nubs be used to navigate the mouse cursor in the desktop environment?

    • Not at this moment, but it will be implemented.

      • Can’t you just map it yourself?

      • As long as it’s enabled in the kernel. IIRC, Notaz has had it working already, it’s just not in the latest test image they’re using. But we will get it in the near future. :)

        • gotta make sure games that will be using analog will disable that or you may see some odd things happening

    • Got an official word on this from Notaz:

Actually it *is* implemented but needs some tweaking.

  5. I chatted with oneup only once, but I learned quite a bit from him and SMW was the first SDL game I really ripped apart and put back together.

    Gone _far_ too soon.

  6. OMG That’s just really sad, i’ve had two friends take there lives. But its something you never can figure out why. Lets all hope they have it better in the “Second Life” or where that is. T_T *RIP* no_skill’s

  7. That’s so horrible. As EvilDragon said I hope he is okay wherever he may be. Unfortunately I did not know the guy, all I know of his work is seeing SMW in a video once.

  8. That’s horrible news, my condolences.

  9. That is terrible news about no_skill, but how do we know that he took his life?

(I do not mean to cause any offense, but this is something which I have always wondered regarding the deaths of people that are known solely on the internet)

  10. That… took me by surprise. I was all happy, and then I read the text. It’s a shame some of us can’t find a way to cope.

  11. Holy crap, Sorry to hear about No_skill. Truely horrible news. I dont think I ever had much interaction with him beyond reading his posts or playing Spout, but I guess it shows how you can even effect someone you have no direct interaction with that I feel sorry to hear he’s gone now.

  12. I thought super mario war was brilliant, despite the high possibility someone else could have thought of it.

    *Tear

    for oneup

  13. Video = Amazing, lets not show emulators ( which make it so amazing for many of us ) in those Commercial-like videos… or else people might think you guys are trying to sell something illegal 8). Good Job.

Sad News = Damn, December really is the worst, two close ones died in the past weeks. Its a really sad loss. All my thoughts go to the family and the close ones.
    Rest in Peace

  14. Hey, that’s bad news but I find it a bit unpropiate to mention/link the story with the pandora unit.

    • True, but as the video is dedicated to him I understand.

  15. That machine looks so damn sexy – I’m going to have so much fun with it when it eventually comes!

  16. Post reminds me of this movie

  17. I sure wish that stylus position was more lefty-friendly.

    • at least I know there is another lefty interested in the pandora, such as myself :)

  18. Awsome!

    • But, someone died!

  19. Really sad to hear about no*skill. This time of year is just crappy. I haven’t heard of him or his game even and I’m still upset about it. It’s just such an unfortunate situation. I wish it didn’t happen. @Nightwish, yes, people need to find the little things in life that make it worth it no matter how much horribleness there is in the world. I can say from personal experience that managing my moods, and generally just keeping my despair in check, is one of the hardest things I have to do each day. Especially around the holidays.

  20. Is there a on/off switch? all the videos I have seen so far, the battery is popped it and it starts to boot.

  21. Can you replace the battery while the pandora is in use still? e.g. having a usb cable powering the device while swapping the batteries over

    • I think you could do it when connected to the psp-charger, but via usb…?
Usb 2.0 provides a max. of 500mA and that depends on the device. So if the port only provides 100/250mA the pandora might not work (especially when you’ve connected other usb devices to the pandora!).

      • ok, well I was thinking it charged through USB but yeh… I’m just wandering if the battery can be swapped out while powered on using another kind of portable power supply

        • It can be charged through USB, but only if it’s turned off. If you use the PSP charger, you can charge and use it at the same time.

  22. A really nice vid, looks really fine (& I’m sorry to hear about oneup). I like the other more ‘casual’ vids too :)

I would like to see a demo of touch-typing using all or most fingers, with the pandora sitting on a table or lap. Is the keyboard large enough for fast typing? I suppose it will depend whether the user is a japanese lady gynocologist or an african-american heavyweight boxer.

I just got out my ruler, my fingers fit across that 14cm with room to spare. I love that the keys are rounded with gaps between. So, hopefully touch-typing on the pandora will be pleasant enough!
