ioquake3 meets OMAP3
January 19, 2010In this video, two men we don’t know play Quake 3 on their N900 Nokias, online, thanks to an oven fresh port of the ioquake3 engine. Why do you care? Because the N900 and Pandora share a heart & soul – the OMAP3530. “But we already have Quake 3, let me dig up those twenty videos.” Yes we do, but ioquake3 is a little more than that. Think of it as Quake 3.5, a feature enhanced animal that has been in active development since the Q3 engine went open source in 2005. This opens a welcoming door to MDave & crew’s Pandora port of Zeq2lite, and in theory, a range of other titles including Tremulous, Urban Terror and Smokin’ Guns (each of which would need to be ported separately). Oh, did we mention that Pickle not only reported this news to the forums, but already has ioquake3 running on Pandora? No? Yeah.

What up! awesome news…
26 seconds of “meh”
…Mehzmerizing awesomeness!
been there, done that. read the forum, enjoyed the news
Can’t comment further until me Pandora come home
Can’t be a bad thing.
Or COULD IT??
Place could do with a lick of paint. Who’s the guy about to bottle the presenters. A bit harsh!
I kinda figured he was raising it in the air, like putting his hand up to come try it. They had just offered to let someone else try.
The peeling paint, the bottle… it must be Fight Club.
Gah… why does everyone forget the first rule of Fight Club?!
It’s one great thing about having the N900 sharing the same SOC.
Another quake related video? Desperate times once more…
Give me pictures of boards on production lines. Chinese factories sending cases. Nubs being nubbed…
I don’t care about quake (I can’t play it worth sh*t). I’ll likely play a bunch of MAME games but mostly my p&|a will be a RUMPC (really)
Just sayin’ tis all. I’m with the “meh” crowd on this one.
It’s not just another Quake. It’s the engine used in a bunch of awesome games! Smokin’ Guns has the best western atmosphere I’ve seen in a game and is amazing multiplayer fun. I can’t wait to own some n900 noobs on the go.
Same… Cool and all, but give me some real Pandora meat.
.. 6 months ago I would have been more excited about this. Now that my excitement level was brought back up with the ‘final’ case images a few weeks ago i think the only thing that I will care about is when they are shipped.
All joking and whining aside this is very cool news.
Yeah me to !
I don’t care about N900, Quake or emulation.
Why not talking about really important things like the Adobe Flash 10 support for example ?
Why report the news when you can make it?
Full Flash 10 support: Confirmed.
Nice !!
That’s some great news
Do you have any link that cover this ?
I hope it’s an official Flash player not a Gnu one.
Flash 10 is coming to pretty much all smartphones except the iPhone soon. Including Pre and n900, so making it work on the Pandora should be possible.
Seems I need to cool it with the sarcasm whilst on the internets.
Like OrR said, it is possible and at this point IMHO also very likely. However, it is far from a definite confirmation.
> Seems I need to cool it with the sarcasm whilst on the internets.
I liked it.
I must admit you got me on this one. So I have no other choice but to tell you that you are an Ass
I only read this website and the official one. I never try the forum for that kind of reason !
This is so obvious nowadays to have Flash on everything ! Even my old PDA while not having any Wifi support do have Flash 8 running on it.
But the fact is that currently Pandora doesn’t officialy support Flash
I wouldn’t worry too much about _official_ support. This is a very inventive community.
I was meaning that kind of _offical_ portage
Let pickle sleep some time goddamn it.
Online Quake on a Pandora is neat, but I would be far more excited to see someone playing the original Unreal Tournament on one.
If we have the dreamcast emulator we will have unreal tournament. But having it running natively would we awesome!
I probably should have written This Post Is Not About Quake in bold letters.
Oh God! Now I am confused. :p
Great news. Sucky video.
Come on, 26 seconds? This is not going to still my hunger! The video even gets ruined by this numskull and his bottle.
Who waves around with a water bottle, anyways?
Not the sort of guy we want on our forums.
LOL! Me, or the guy waving with the bottle? =)
Seriously though, the video is nothing interesting at all. Quake is very cool and all, but we’ve been there and done this tens of times already.
I appreciate all the news about the Pandora and the OMAP3 CPU, but sometimes it gets a little saturated.
You were so disinterested you felt the need to post about it? You must be very bored or just petty. Anyway, all news is good news. Also, this isn’t about Quake as already pointed out.
Fascinatingly enough, more people gleaned something of interest out of the vid than you.
/yawn
Funny thing is the room was packed. All kinds of serious devs there, but they all wanted to see ioquake
lol im not very impressed, but I think thats only for the deveoping point of view.. ^^
Filmed in hitlers bunker?
i thought the n900 used an omap 3430, not 3530. wikipedia seems to agree with me, though we could both be wrong.
no, im right. this comment is inaccurate:
“Because the N900 and Pandora share a heart & soul – the OMAP3530.”
the n900 uses a 3430.
Different number, same stuff
You’re right, my mistake! Mali is correct too though – they really are the same thing.
Well I learn something about pre-ordering today.
Two years ago I pre-order 3 things “under-construction” : The Pandora, a Game and a Software.
Today : none of them are completed!
I do have a Beta from the Game, videos prototype of the Pandora and no word from the Software designer at all.
Finally pre-order things it’s a very bad idea from the designer part (even if the money is used for purpose like producing the Pandora).
Every community around these 3 products are globally disappointed and I suppose they will be very critical when they finally receive the product.
It’s a good lesson for me because I’m currently creating a video game and I’d like to avoid most of constraints until the final product.
The critical sense from the public is probably the one most difficult to contain.
I wish good chance to the Pandora Team.
I would not like being in their shoes right now.
You’re a Jonah, get off our project!
I agree its generally better to dont show anything of the product until its finished if you want to avoid dissapointment. For the pandora though, this would make the whole project impossible. They needed money from somewhere and people arent going to invest in something without a promise of what it can do or what it will become.
Yeah but the part of totally lying about the possibility to receive the Pandora on christmas 2008 in order to get peoples’ money to fund the project was not so cool.
I sure hope they just didn’t know shit about what they were saying when they pulled out these “two more months” arguments one after another, but the initial estimate before pre-order openings was a white lie for sure.
I really really hope this whole story will one day be covered in a book, from start to finish. If the Pandora will turn out to be a success, despite its aged hardware, it will surely find appropriate mention somewhere and we all will look back at this time with a positive feeling, that we were part of gaming history in the making.
I would say basically they just had no clue about how long it would take, and were widely unrealistically optimistic about it. I don’t think they were deliberately deceptive about it. If they wanted to be deceptive like that, they could just take the pre-order money and run with it. I can’t estimate times myself, things often take 10 times longer that what I would hope! They only way to do it is based on experience + statistics, not intuition and guesswork.
Anyway, I think it’s a miracle that this project [looks like it] will be finished. It’s not such a simple thing to design and build an innovative and market-leading pocket computer in your spare time! I think the team deserves our fullest respect and appreciation for actually doing all this hard work, and seeing the project through.
bla bla yes I’ve heard that stuff dozens of times already and it is of course true but it doesn’t contradict what I#ve said either so yeah
I wish they’d put the graphics options to the max when showing off Quake3 (be it on iPhone, Pandora or anything else…)
Quake was made to scale down very well and run smoothly on any kind of machine so meh.
but yay for ioQuake on P&|a, means more native games!
