Second batch update

January 22, 2010
Posted by: Butterman

For everybody who didn’t get in on the first batch, EvilDragon has ordered “the parts” for the second batch. “The parts” sounds pretty comprehensive so it’s possible that “the parts” refers to ALL of the components that make up the Pandora.

Good news for 2nd batchers: We’ve ordered the parts for the second batch, so that it doesn’t take too long.

Maybe EvilDragon will enlighten us.

  1. is it supposed to be funny?

    • Uh, what?

  2. Eeh i missed something?

What’s up about the first batch if i didn’t saw notices about the mould approval?

    • Just hope that those batches will be produced in order :D

    • Yeah, I guess this is just some kind of substitute news once again.

  3. This kind of hurts. While it IS good news (any hang-up sucks) it stings me a little. I’m waiting as patiently as I can.

    • Lets focus on the first batch first, then let the second batch people wait a year or so…

  4. I’ll venture a guess that he’s referring to the off-the-shelf components like the LCD, CPU, etc, rather than the custom parts like the case and AV cable. The off-the-shelf stuff can have huge, unpredictable lead times (I’ve seen as long as six months), so it makes sense to order it much earlier than they plan to need it.

  5. This is good news, It means that the community of users will be bigger, sooner. Attracting more developer attention. I know it’s encouraging me to finish the pandora games I’m working on.

I can remember the deadline I set myself at the end of 2008 so I could be ready for launch. heh.

  6. sounds like he’s refering to the boards and screen to me. Makes sense to me because they’re the only thing that’s really the only thing that’s “done” enough to really be able to order them. The cases are the ones thing that’s holding up the process of us actually GETTING pandoras so that cant be it.

    • Well, the 2nd-batch cases are effectively ordered already, because this “batch” of cases is supposed to be 10,000, even though the first batch is only 4,000.

  7. I feel as if I’ve been slapped in the face.
I mean I perfectly understand why and everything, it’s just soo ironic. :(

  8. I’m aiming for March as the time I’m getting a Pandora.

    • Only two more months (TM) then!

  9. They really have little else to do while they’re waiting for the case — according to recent accounts, they’re all set as soon as they get the Green Light. So they got proactive for the next batch to help move that along.

Otherwise, all the second-batchers would complain when they don’t get theirs as soon as they’d hope.

I don’t see how this is problem. For anyone. Unless you’re a can of potatos.

    • I appreciate your consideration of how something like this might effect me, it’s nice to know someone cares.

      • You’re welcome. Represent!

  10. ^ That’s right. It’s bad enough being a first batcher waiting for the moulds to be done. Imagine being a second batcher waiting 6 months because they neglected to order the OMAPs! They have to do all this stuff well in advance.

I understand how people feel though. Second batch news is not what we’re desperate for right now. ;)

  11. How many?

    • Read the source you lazy |*d.

The order is for 4000 + 4000 later in the year. The lead time is 4months+

  12. Yay! (^o^)/

  13. Yeah, good stuff. “slap in the face”, wtf? It just shows they are thinking ahead which is good.

  14. /me fake enthusiasm, Yay second batchers!
Hey does anyone know if they will sell cases separate if we want one for modding purposes?

    • I can’t see why they wouldn’t sell cases seperate for modding purposes once they’re on top of orders. I think they’ve ordered 10,000 cases so they’ll have some spare i think. Maybe search the forum as I’m sure it would of been asked and answered already.

  15. How about getting the Pandora out to the ones who pre-ordered before actually ordering a new batch?

This is just retarded. First you delay thing for more than a year, then when it finally comes somewhat closer, then you suddenly focus on something that should be far of in the horizon atm.

    • I could point to several places where they said how they weren’t going start thinking about this for a while, because they wanted some time in between the batches, to make sure there weren’t any problems, so the software could mature, etc. I think the first time was in January last year, when they were expecting March/April completion – they weren’t even planning on taking pre-orders until June. Why the sudden change?

    • You are joking right?
The first batch is a finacial loss for the team already. If they don’t order the parts in time, it _will_ take till 2011 for the second batch and you could just order a grave on the local cemetary for the Pandora project instead. Think about it. I’m a second batcher and I would go elsewhere if I wasn’t convinced in the success of the project. I’m glad that the team knows what they are doing.

      • Dude, you got it all wrong. The first batch should (maybe, we hope) be done in time for Christmas 2010. The second batch is scheduled for early 2012 (y’know, the same year the world is supposed to end). The world ends on December 22, 2012.

The only reason they’re ordering parts now is because it’s a parts availability issue. See if they waited until 2012 I suspect many of the parts will be obsoleted and/or discontinued and they really really want to make sure we get our Pandora units before the big space rock smashes into the earth. This way, everyone who ordered a Pandora can die happy with one of them in their hands. If I get my Pandora, I’m going to go out playing that famous Atari game, Asteroids.

    • “This is just retarded.”

      Your post? I agree.

  16. You might want to add this to the unoffical roadmap?

    • What is wrong with the roadmap?
If the first batch is 4000 than
      This number is wrong 3895:
      1) 105 boards are abused too much for further use(They said so before) they still need to build 4000.
      2) 2 boards had died thus they still need to make them. If they decide to use the abused batch they still need to build _3897_ boards (but really should 4000).

  17. lol im starting to die for great news…
the only remedy at the moment is to look at the expensive sony vaio P
