Cpasjuste has uploaded a video of Android running on the Pandora. Android is an operating system that was originally developed by an independent company and later brought by Google. Android is a popular operating system for smart phones.

This is my first attempt to port android to the pandora, touch screen support in the work.

  1. Nice, but cpasjuste needs a new pandora, the missing LCD cover mechanism is annoying.

  2. Oh my! This IS a huge reason to buy a Pandora… where do I order from the second batch?!

    • You might still be able to get a left-over/cancelled Pandora from the first batch.

      UK shop
      http://gbax.com/pandoraxxx.html
      German shop
      http://www.gp2x.de/shop/contact_us.php

      • The German order site does not work at the moment. Maybe somebody can forward this error to them?

        1146 – Table ‘sql740.action_recorder’ doesn’t exist

        select date_added from action_recorder where module = ‘ar_contact_us’ and ( identifier = ’127.0.0.1′) and date_added >= date_sub(now(), interval 15 minute) and success = 1 order by date_added desc limit 1

        [TEP STOP]

        • There is no “order site” I’m aware of. You have to email them. It’s listed on the actual homepage under where to buy. I believe that method of ordering will put you in the second batch unless someone cancels and puts the next person in line for first batch. Order now and you could get into first, or you could be first in line for a second. They ship them in that order, I believe.

          • There is no queue for the second batch yet. If there are left-over/cancellations, you can get one from the first batch, or you get none, if there aren’t any free spots currently available. The second batch order is yet to be announced. This won’t happen till the first batch is shipping.

        • His shop was broken(see twitter), but it’s working now.

    • don’t. You will regret it.

      • Why? Do you have an issue with the pandora? The second batch will be much faster than the first, you know, as it’s only production, not design. Think programming vs. compiling. You just make more, as long as there aren’t any problems with the first batch ones. (and I doubt there will be. These things have been very thoroughly tested)

  3. Wooo! Android! Does this mean we should be able to play android games and apps with a little bit work?

    • I’m no dev, but I think that if android works, than most android apps should work too! Yet another reason the Pandora is awesome!

    • In theroy yes, Android is based on a Java virtual machine so apps should work anywhere. But, most apps are distributed through Google’s app store so you’d need an Android phone (that has root) to download the app, then transfer it to the Pandora. The Pandora has almost the same screen size as the Motorola Droid so the display probably won’t be an issue.

  4. Great stuff. Can’t wait to see Chrome OS too!

    • Have you used Chrome OS? I don’t think it’d be worth porting it to the Pandora.

    • “The operating system is based on Linux and will run only on specifically designed hardware.”

So, maybe yes and maybe no. It says specific hardware, but it also says ARM support, so…yeah.

Why would you want to run Chrome OS over Android anyways?

      • Chrome os is only good for kiosks in my opinion. I want me a decent desktop on my pandora! I’m sticking with the original desktop.

  5. Nice. Watching pandora running android from my android phone. Just got one to hold me over til my pandora gets here.

  6. Well, since Android is an ARM-based operating system, that means that (with some refining), the Pandora should be able to run ALL ARM Android apps out there! This is because the Pandora is quite powerful, much more powerful that most mobile phones that run it.

    In short: THIS. IS. AWESOME.

1,000 thanks to Cpasjuste. Now just refine it a little bit and we will have ourselves one awesome little piece of equipment (not that it was already awesome enough).

  7. haha, such luck I havent bought SD cards yet, so much awesome stuff that needs to be fit on em.

  8. Incredible !
Hope this kind of port is more easier than I think…

  9. Android would be good, purely because of the amount of programs available for it. It’s not just a mobile phone OS either, it’s designed for small devices like internet tablets, media players etc. Should be interesting, hopefully we get fully supported drivers from somewhere so it can run at full speed.

    • Are their not more programs available for Pandoras choice of linux than android?

      • I might be wrong but I dont think the amount of available applications ported for ARM linux of any sort is that big.

        • Two things:
It will have GP2X compatibility, so you will already have an armload of games to work with, as well as a PSX emu, PSP emu and N64 Emu, all fullspeed by launch. PSX is already fullspeed.

Also, Open source allows anything with a compatible interpreter (python, devkitPro) to be ported fairly simply, sometimes just recompiling. Quake 3 already works, too!

          • Yeah, but noone is going to do that simple recompiling. Just look at the Wiz, which was also advertized as being backwards-compatible to the GP2X. The truth hurts, even more so for opensource projects.

  10. The lack of google-hater rage in this thread is disturbing.

    • What do people have against google? They made an open source OS for crying out loud! How unhated can they get?!?

    • FUCK GOOGLE!

    • Google is just too free to hate on
      Macintush and Microshit however…

      • No kidding! What’s wrong with google? They’re a big corporation that loves linux! Their browser and OS both work natively, and the source code is available!!! what is wrong with you People? Google is probably the best big company I’ve ever seen.

    • Seconded.

  11. hahahaha;

“Android is a popular operating system for smart phones.”

next you’ll be telling us that bears sh1t in the woods, and apple have just released some new kind of tablet device.
    :)

    • Hehe.
But seriously, who doesn’t know what android is, besides the entire population of my area?

      • In reality though, I’ve only met one person with an Android phone, four or five with an iPhone and dozens with generic iPhone clones.

        • I’ve only seen iphones myself, and a few of those attempts by verizon and motorola…

    • The transistor is a popular electronic component

      • I don’t think popular is quite the word for it….

  12. Now go for Symbian!

  13. If Android runs on the pandora does that mean we get full flash support?

    • You can flash, but I won’t support it.
