ED tweets Fatih’s feats
February 2, 2010
Fatih and his trusty translator are making their presence felt in China, and they’re all out of bubblegum. EvilDragon reports via Twitter:
Fatih and his friend are constantly phoning up the chinese company to make them work faster. Not easy dealing with chinese companies…
Fresh news from Fatihs chinese speaking friend. He phoned with the company.
he wanted me to explain you that you will thank him when you see the case he had to make a lot of working on current mould. and tested a lot
“now they are 100% sure, it’s perfect. he will send the samples tomorrow morning.” It’s night in China already. Let’s hope…
In between tweets, ED also made a long post on the German boards which was hurriedly transported to GP32X and dissected by a team of crack multilinguals. The salient facts from this post:- Production at the case factory runs up until Feb 13, at which point they break for Chinese New Year. They need the green light by the 8th in order to produce 4,000 cases before they hit the red cordial for two weeks. Confidence in MWeston’s green light is high, so if they get samples into the mail tomorrow we could slip in before the dreaded CNY. There is also some kind of plan B that involves Fatih flying to China wielding a large stick.

What's this?
SWEET! I am really really hopeful this time!
Of course I have no idea what will actually happen, but now that we’ve got someone who can really bust their butts in China, I’m feeling a bit more confident.
Here’s hoping.
its the 2nd today. the cases will be posted on the 3rd. from experience we need around 6 days for them to arrive. thats the 8th (best case scenario). mweston needs to scrutinise and test them, give word to the factory to mass produce them. 9th. factory begins production – 9th or 10th. factory ships 4000 cases – 13th.
we need an almost best case scenario to get the cases before CNY. nothing in the pandora project has ever worked along the “best case scenario” timeline. ever.
we’re not seeing these cases til march. i wish the pandora team would stop stringing us along. we’re not idiots.
But as long as they are working on the software part of the Pandora, addressing each tiny little bugs here and there I’m happy with that situation.
April is probably a good estimation now I think. Mainly because everyone look enthusiast about “green light”.
So you’re telling me you’d rather just have a Pandora with a buggy OS than no Pandora at all.
This whole process has gone far beyond stupidly ridiculous.
^ I switched that around. Whatever.
Pegasus.
The OS will take years to perfect. You really want to wait until the OS is completely perfect before Pandora ships?
i think you’re on your own on that one.
“so *IF* they get samples into the mail tomorrow we *COULD* slip in before the dreaded CNY.”
That’s a pretty provisional statement; they’re not making any guarantees here.
I suppose they could add to any estimates they provide, “but if anything goes wrong there will be further indefinite delays”… but isn’t that kind of a given?
>it’s perfect. he will send the samples tomorrow morning
LOL
To me too thats some kind of contradiction.
I, like I imagine everyone is, am tired of all the delays. I thought they were already perfect and being sent? It seems like they just want a bit more money, time and a half, for working the New Year. They really do need kicking. They better send it out tonight, their tomorrow.
They don’t get time and a half. They have paid time off. They cannot work.
I was referring to them saying that they will work for extra money, many Chinese do, according to the tweets and post.
I guess no one else thinks the hybrid twitter bird / Red Dragon isn’t fantastic? Good work whomever is responsible for that one. I grinned from ear to ear.
This really should of been plan A
“Fatih flying to China wielding a large stick.”
This title makes me mildly uncomfortable when I try to say it five times fast
LOL! Best post so far…
*sigh* Won’t be getting it for my trip to Japan after all….
Call me crazy, but if I were going to Japan, I’d be too busy soaking it all in to even open up my Pandora.
I think that it would be funny if when things get approved, that they turn the whole main http://www.openpandora.org page to have a green background…
Ya.. Lets do that !!
you’re simple.
Thank you…
I love it.
Wait, what?!?
A quote, from this blog post:
http://pandorapress.net/2010/01/30/wait-wasnt-new-years-like-a-month-ago/
“We spoke to the factory, they confirmed the moulds are finished and they are shipping final samples this weekend.
Craigix”
Dated Jan 30, so presumably that was said earlier. Why were they not shipped last weekend, as they told us they would?!
Hi, you must be new here….
lol… best reply ever
Bows deeply.

(wordpress, stop bothering me. I know it’s a duplicate comment)
I agree. That was on the 27th, and here’s a quote from that one:
“And with finished, I do mean REALLY finished. Not just another step, but all steps. This does mean theyll ship the final samples within the next days.”
So if it was already “REALLY REALLY” finished, why wasn’t it shipped before tomorrow?
Now, I don’t know Fatih and I’m not pretending I do so I do not know how much say he has in OpenPandora Ltd’s workings, but i’m GUESSING that Craig and/or Michael would get the final say anyway so, why isn’t there talk of Craig and/or Michael going to China to check the sample cases? Then assuming all was well, they could give the go ahead for sending the whole 4000 instead.
It’s much more expensive to ship a person overseas and ship them back than to ship a bunch of plastic one way.
I understand that, but surely you would admit that a bit of forethought might of saved the buying public (of which I am obviously one) a week or two. I can understand that as a company you have to make money, but after resigning yourselves (a long time ago) to the fact that you weren’t gonna make a profit out of the first batch, what’s a couple of grand for good customer relations after all that you and the buying public have been through ?
How would a week or two make any difference after waiting a year or two?
Because it would stop people like me questioning what I think should have been an obvious thing to do. I would of called it a logical progression but that’s just my personal opinion and I think it was an acceptable point to bring up.
Not to bitch or speculate, but weren’t they 100% last week and sent?
http://pandorapress.net/2010/01/27/official-blog-our-own-personal-babelfish/
Man WTH with these horrible shipping times? Is 6-8 days really the best they can do? That’s horrible!
Since we have all this faith in the Chinese manufacturing company, let’s simply trust them and give them the green light now. After all, they claim it’s perfect and if you stop and think about it, they want to get the cases out too so they can get paid for the job and move on to bigger and better things. I really don’t care if the silk screening for the letter R and K are off by 1 mm or whatever. I’m interested in the guts of the device which we all know works. I’d even be interested in buying the guts separate if there is going to be a long delay like two more months.
So, Mr. Weston, give them the green light without the inspection so we can get these Pandora’s into production!
If you absolutely must have to see them, do a video conference. Or…wowzers…we could have sent them mock up parts so they can test assembly on their end. We should still consider that if MWeston rejects this case.
Gruic
Gruic
I would say MWeston should either accept it now or fly there(possibly with Fatih and his chinese speaking friend [three in total]) and see the perfectness for himself(themselves). (but he/they really should fly there)
That’s nonsense. A fuck up this late would render all prior efforts useless. They _have_ to be checked by MWeston first.
Ok so assuming we get the green light, and get the cases done before Chinese New Years, any idea how long it’ll take to assemble the Pandoras? I’m assuming shipping’ll probably be slow (maybe week or more to the U.S.?) Well here’s hoping it isn’t two more months still! o.O
Serious question here…if the cases are given the green light and they can pump out 1000 a day, where do the keymats fit in the picture? Are they already done? Can they produced just as quickly? God I just can’t wait to get this thing in my hands…it’s been waay too long.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, I REALLY WANT THE PANDORA FOR MY TRIP TO COLORADO IN SPRING BREAK!!!!!!!! PLEASE LET EVERYTHING WORK THE WAY IT’S SUPPOSED TO AND PLEASE, LET’S SEE A GREEN LIGHT!
Heh, I’ve already missed having my Pandora for two Christmases, two birthdays, an overseas flight and an intercity train trip. Not to mention countless trips to the “Mall” while I sit and wait for my wife to visit every clothes shop and every shoe shop. Thankfully I’m still about 10 months behind on reading Retro Gamer…
I had a mole removed today. It hurt!
My puppy lost two molars and won’t stop whining.
Hahah my cat had one of it’s canines removed (funny I know). And now she sometimes pulls this funny as crooked winking face lol like she’s trying to chomp on the missing tooth
The boards haven’t even been created yet!
Where is that process being done?
How long would that take?
I bought into this project understanding a certain amount of delays but it’s getting beyond a joke.
Don’t worry about it, boards don’t take long to populate. What are we talking? maybe an hour or so to put a thousand through a pick and place machine and a wave solderer?
