ED tweets: Scheduled delivery date rescheduled

February 4, 2010
Posted by: Butterman

From ze Twitter:

Status: In Transit – Rescheduled Rescheduled Delivery Date: 08/02/2010 Would’ve been nice before the weekend, but won’t happen sadly.

But it’s not all bad news, as MWeston has kindly informed us:

It might bounce back to Friday once it hits the US border (Alaska). These China shipments change the delivery date once or twice along the route every time. Sometimes they change back to the original delivery date, sometimes they don’t. We’ll know by tonight.

Tense?

Update: There’s a new post from ED on the official blog. It covers stuff you already know, but here’s the link anyway.

  1. Im still hoping :(

  2. Oh, come on, you all know what is going to happen. Weston will find some problems with the “final” case and chinese will happily forget about it until after the holidays. Then they will tweak the case one more time and send it to Weston again. He will confirm it’s ok and give the factory green light for mass production. Chinese will produce all the cases and then ship them to Weston.
Guess how much time all of this is gonna take?

    • lol

    • three years

  3. *headdesks*

  4. crapface.

  5. doh :(

  6. *facepalm* …somebody had to do it.

  7. What really sucks is if they don’t get out *any* cases, ironically, February will feel like the longest month of the year.

  8. am i the only one kinda regretting i didnt spend my cash on some sort of netbook instead?

    • Yes.
Come on! It’s on a boat (or plane?) going to MWeston. Once he gets them, re re-ship or Texas so they can be filled with the boards and stuff, and then they are shipped to the impatient customers.
That’s *nothing* compared to actually developing a machine, it’s OS, and all.

    • Yesterday I was thinking about taking back my money and buying nokia N900 instead but after reading frustrated commenters at maemo forums who are unsure if there is going to be maemo 6 for N900 and company folks who are afraid to promise anything I decided to watch maemo as it will move to OMAP4, Qt, DRM lock and app store.
After all, Pandora is the best vaporware at the moment and even if it won’t get full fanservice it will make excellent dumb nostalgia satisfaction machine.

    • now i’m too

    • I am delighted the Pandora is so close to being in my hands. Netbooks and other wannabees don’t cut the cheese, or olive loaf.

      • Plam Pre can cut the cheese.

  9. oh so tense

  10. NOW that is funny…
i didn’t expect anything from it (as usual).

they dont give a damn that people who buyed their pandoras waiting TWO YEARS AREADY to get it…

    fuck!!!

    • Calm down. It’s one weekend.

      • it never is :(
it’s already been “one weekend” every week for whole last year… that’s why it make me this mad, but you are right. i should calm down and just wait coz there is nothing that i can do to speed things up.

    • I bet you they do care… but what can they do? Send you the separate PCB board and loose screen?

You’ll get it when its ready.

      • I’m sure they care. It’s their money too. How, you might ask? I think they’re losing money on this round, maybe quite a bit of it. I don’t think they’re going to make any money until at least round 2 or round 3. So every day that they don’t produce is another day that they’re not making any money for their hard earned work. Every person or developer who gets tired of the project is another word of mouth advertiser they don’t have. They have to hate these delays more than we do, but I’m glad they’re trying to get things right.

And as the delays turn from weeks to months to over a year, other products are churned out that turn people’s heads and make that *wow* factor for some of the populace less. (For me, I wanted a hand held Linux gaming machine with 3d rendering to play with, so I don’t care that it may not be the most powerful portable.

The iPhone doesn’t have gaming controls, but it has a really slick interface and does game. There are some gadget guys out there that may have bought this and then an iPhone 1/2 a year ago, but won’t purchase this now that they have the iPhone and other devices may rival this one’s power.

That, and I’m sure they feel the pressure of having so many people’s money and still not having products to those people.

I think their release dates were overly optimistic, almost every time they gave one if for no other reason than not allowing enough time for slippage and taking the Chinese MFR’s estimates at face value after those dates slipped a couple times. I do appreciate getting more of the back and forth with the factory so WE can take those estimates with a grain of salt. Mostly I believe it was just now knowing how long this thing would take and how the Chinese operate.

Am I disappointed I don’t have a Pandora. You betcha. Is it possible I won’t see mine for months. Sure. Do I plan on pulling out? No.

Putting my money into this was a risk, but one I was willing to take. I believe we’re close now, but we’ve been close before. There are still places where they could encounter hitches. I’m willing to wait it out, but that’s my choice. If it’s bugging you that you’ve paid and don’t have product, it’s okay to pull out and wait until the 2nd or 3rd batch when they actually have units on hand before shipping them, or at least have the manufacturing process better ironed out.

Here’s hoping the team the best, that I see my Pandora sometime in February or early March, and that there are no further hitches with the hardware. I wanna see the awesome indy games, I wanna see a good emulation station, and I want to tinker with a hand held whose team encourages tinkering.

      • that is not what i meant, they should have be more serious to their costomers from the start…

    • Yeah, I bought a Pandora TWO YEARS AGO and OpenPandora has yet to send me a sympathy card for my waiting so long! They think working so hard on it to make it near perfect and near bug-free and getting zero sleep makes up for it.

      Those jerks!

      • The first year delay had nothing to do with “working hard.” They didn’t have things straightened out before they accepted pre-orders, and they knew it.

      • They can’t even send us e-mail from the mailling list because last October : “This is the last OpenPandora newsletter before we start shipping Pandora consoles to customers.”
        LOL

  11. I’m interested to find out if the Chinese company was being totally honest when they said it was worth the development time.

    • They test the Pandora resistance case under wheels of 3 Hummers in a row.
The plastic is resistant to shells and mortars.

Even some satellite get lost while costing millions and years of development. But I would be very upset if the damn thing is more fragile compared to a DS Lite.

  12. I thought the green light cutoff to get these mass produced before Chinese New Year was the 8th. Even if the delay holds and they get these on the 8th instead of friday, doesn’t that still give them a few hours to carefully inspect the case and possibly green light it in time to beat the cutoff anyway? Even with this delay we might get it soon.

Or we might not, I’m on the ass end of the preorder so even if I don’t get mine for awhile, I suspect at least those in the first 2000-3000 spots will get one prior to march anyway.

    • The case factory said they can make 4,000 cases by the 13th, if they get the green light by the 8th. But it’s looking like OP Ltd are aiming for just 1,000 (various factors make this a more realistic target). One could assume (dangerous, I know) that to produce this lower number, a green light on the 9th or 10th might be ok.

      • So it is more april for majority of us from around 2000~4000 in the queue. No problems but they should warn us.

  13. To think we were supposed to get these in Spring 2008…

    • In fact : Two more years !

  14. St patricks day ( march 17th ) for delivery off at least one “complete” pandora / paddy-dora to a final non-dev customer.

I think the comment earlier about speed vs price vs quality rings true – you can’t have all 3, and the correct 2 were achieved.

That doesn’t, of course, take the edge off the fact that it has been ~2 years!

  15. D’you remember my comment a week or two ago, where I suggested to the OP team that they not make assumptions, that the Chinese New Year was (like the Anglo one) one day long? Well, I’m not certain I trust Wikipedia (because I am so generally ignorant of all matters Chinese) but Wikipedia is saying now that the Chinese New Year is about 15 days long, from Jan. 28th until Feb. 14th (year of the Tiger). We now have, what, 10 days to get the Chinese started on production, and get at least *some* of the cases shipped, because I think it’s NOT going to be like one long weekend, is it?

    • We’ve been through this a year ago when we were waiting for a CNC prototype, so yeah, we’re all aware of the two week holdup that is CNY. :) That’s why the case factory is pushing to do the first run by the 13th, and that’s why OP Ltd is pushing for a more realistic 1,000 instead of 4,000. Obviously they’re cutting it very fine, but the fat lady hasn’t sung yet.

  16. While I’ve never had overseas deliveries via UPS, I have had my package delayed before… usually this results in it getting in the day it was predicted or sometime in between. I’m used to receiving things 1-2 days before the scheduled date.

That being said, the first prediction was the 8th I think. When we first got the tracking info we liked that it was a few days sooner, but the original expectation is now UPS’s expectation, which doesn’t seem bad

  17. Future, I think.

  19. Yeah, if that happens, we’d be looking at getting the cases delivered no earlier than March 19th. Ick.

  20. another two or tree years…

    like they care.

  21. Why not exploit the remaining instead of worrying about it?

I propose a ‘two more months’ compo, where the object is to design and prototype a game before the end of Chinese New Year, then spend six weeks building it. That way, when the cases do finally get finished and the units start being mailed out, there will be this massive influx of content coming in on or about opening day.

I’ll participate, who else is in?

  22. Funny you mention that! There’s currently a coding competition being put together on the boards.

    http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/topic/51639-gp32gp2xwizdingoo-coding-competition

When it’s ready to go we’ll announce it across the forums & various community blogs (openxile, newsweez, dingoonity etc).

  23. Sounds good! Is there any way I could request/vote for/weasel one of the forum admins into making SDL + OpenGL into one of the allowed platforms? (until we have the actual hardware, that’s probably about as close as I can get to targetting OpenPandora.)

  24. Best bet is to post in the thread and see what Iorgy77 thinks. It’s not run by admins or anything, it’s just a community thing. :)

  25. Awww, if I only could code better.
