Photo: Final keymat
February 5, 2010From the bucket of Weston.
Update: EvilDragon elaborates on the official blog. A little.
Wow. Actually, there’s something that happened earlier than expected: The cases did arrive, including the final keymats.
Here’s a picture of the final keymat. Now please give Michael some time to thoroughly test everything out.
Update 2: Mr Weston will be putting together some photos (and hopefully a video) later today, detailing what went right and what went not-so-right with this batch of cases. At the time of writing this, it’s some time before dawn in his neck of the woods, so the next few hours will probably a waste of your F5 miles. Sit tight.
Very sexy
Ok, well that piece looks perfect.
So what? It’s not part of the case, is it?
If it really is, don’t the D-pad and company also count??? I thought they were already perfect and ready for MP, please tell me that the imperfection Craig was talking about does not concern them!!!1
Purely speculation on my part, but I’m going to guess that the imperfections are probably either related to the finish (not matte enough) or the silkscreening (some text isn’t quite over holes, they don’t quite like the way it looks, etc). If it’s this kind of imperfection, then we’re in good shape and we can all relax.
I’m sure MWeston will have more to say about it at the appropriate time…
Yeargh, I hoped the finish wouldn’t be shiny enough. That would have been an imperfection I like.
This is unbelievably ugly. The arms and camera are reflected by every single key. I hope he used flash to take that picture, and that the mat will look less shiny in everyday surroundings. Just look at the C-Key, the face is reflected as if by the convex side of a table spoon!
Here, troll, here troll! Have a niiiice juicy steak, troll.
*tosses*
Goooooooood troll.
Take a Valium and relax, bro.
are you serious? Are you going to be staring at the keys mere inches from your face? You must really not like your own reflection or something.
and yes, there is a lot of light on it, but shiny mat is shiny, what did you expect?
I rather like the look of the keys; it’s pretty consistent with what I’d expect on a quality smartphone, and, even if they’d gone with matte keys, I’d expect to press them all until they’re worn down to being shiny anyway
.
On another note, it seems like the resident naysayers are grasping at straws at this point, since they can’t just cry ‘vapourware!’ anymore.
You want smartphones? You want MP4-players?
ChinAmerica is pig!
/s?
You need to get some therapy. Seriously.
Since when disliking glossy surfaces warrants a therapy?
Since it constitutes being delusional, since we knew the key-mat was glossy for a year now.
>> Since when disliking glossy surfaces warrants a therapy?
> Since it constitutes being delusional
You see, in this situation you cannot call him (or me) delusional unless you somehow prove that keymat is not glossy.
>> Since when disliking glossy surfaces warrants a therapy?
> since we knew the key-mat was glossy for a year now
Congratulations, you’ve just won the Special Olympics.
For this pearl I reward you with my own special
SEAL OF APPROVAL [Y]
>> you cannot call him (or me) delusional unless you somehow prove that keymat is not glossy.
Your comprehension also seems to be impaired: You are delusional in that you convinced yourself it would not be glossy, contrary to all available information. That’s the textbook definition of delusion.
>you convinced yourself it would not be glossy, contrary to all available information
Where did you get that impression from, I wonder?
I knew all along keymat would be glossy and wobbly.
Don’t strawman me.
I guess you had better not use the Pandora’s keyboard by taking pictures of it with a point and shoot camera, then.
Shut up Kefinan.
[edit]
:sealofquality:
Seriously, rewarding “shut up”? Why don’t you just ban everyone who isn’t posting smileys then?
He was rewarding himself. Please tell me you see that.
No place for humour in these parts.
Kefinan has been around long enough to know what the keymats look like. He’s just stirring the pot.
The “seal of approval” image isn’t a reward, for the record. It’s used to highlight important information.
Still, you can’t expect everyone to love everything about pandora and it’s fun to see someone bitching. I may not agree with him (actually, I do – I deeply despise everything glossy) but rainbows and unicorns in comments to each post about another delay is just sick.
Heh, I know it’s not a reward. But when you have the power to give something to yourself, it was like patting yourself on the back. Almost as if after you hit “Submit Comment” you looked at yourself in the mirror and were like, “Yea…good Job.”
Silly goose.
Geez, no place for humour in these parts!
Of course I saw the shiny keymats back then. It’s just that I can’t remember seeing lots of arms and cameras and beards being reflected in them, so I felt the need to drop another comment about it. I don’t see how that would “stir the pot”. I don’t think anyone who has waited so long will cancel his pre-order just because of unexpected shininess.
Wait wait wait, WHY THE HELL ARE YOU COMPLAINING??? just becauise there’s a reflection on a photo taken just to show an example of a finished keymat? Would you like to complain about every car on the planet with glass? Not it’s not a professional photo, BIG GODDAMN DEAL! MOVE ON.
Hopefully all MWeston’s arms and beards aren’t staring back from every Pandora.
In fairness though, you can only see that detail when you click for the large pic. The smaller version in the article is closer to actual size.
you know Kefinan, maybe you should calm down a bit, perhaps it isn’t actually reflections on shinny keys you are looking at, maybe this keymat revision just has the same little picture embedded in each key! try to look on the bright side! =P
ahah, you rock
Wow, I was under the impression that keymats were done with and we had 4000 in a factory somewhere…O well, looks shinier.
It looks perfect too me!
/excitement
Don’t know how the mat feels, but it sure does look perfect to me. Thumbs up!
I really want to stay up late to see the pictures of the case, but I really need to get up early tomorrow. =) Let’s hope the case gets the stamp of approval, so the Pandora can get a release rather quickly.
I am very super excited about seeing a keymat that totally looks nothing like the hundreds of keymats we’ve already seen before
Beware, you might be told to shut up for this insolence!
BURN HIM, HE IS DELUSIONAL
uhm… where is the “*” key ?
On the 8 key, hidden by glare from the camera flash.
I’m hoping for a release, as this keymat looks great (I really hope whatever imperfections they might find don’t cause any further delays and are small enough to trust will be fixed so they can continue moving forward).
Everything looks all nice and aligned on this one. Fingers crossed!
So beautiful.
That keymat looks like it’s going to be part of a luxury yacht’s master control keyboard. So shiny, so beautiful, *drool*, *drip*, *drool*
Now THAT is one sexy keymat. How can anyone find fault with that pic, gorgeously lovely.
Can’t wait to see the vid!!
V.nice.
Not a great deal else to say really
I was looking at the keyboard and thought how I would reassign things for more convinient usage and it made me see, ctrl + alt + Fkey is not possible, at least not in a way that would make it usable to quick jump to cammand line, so how will that work?
All the keys will be re-definable as I understand it, plus sticky keys will presumably be one solution. I have to assume there will also be situations that can’t be resolved instantly and might be fixed later with FW updates.
Very nice.
There’s a lot of useless drivel on the forums about imperfections; has MWeston actually said anything at all about what they might be?

btw, there are pictures of the rev3 case on MWeston’s photobucket.
oh well, lets take those a little duct tape and never ever go out with the pandora on a rainy day. Nice keymat though.
The Pandora is VAPORWARE.
I will not check this website for another 6 months, come back, and still read about “parts shipping”.
Luckily enough, I lost no money in this scam.

You really think anyone wants to email you, giving you their anger and email addresses, you are a moron.
Brandt, many products take even longer than this, and they usually aren’t announced until they are ready. The Pandora team decided to announce immediately after the inception of the idea, and provide a rare free service of behind-the-scenes updates ever since.
So everyone can see the evidence that it’s not vaporware. And pre-orders can and have been canceled. Therefore, calling it vaporware or a scam is not an opinion; it’s pure ignorance.
If you only check this site for a few minutes every 6 months, that ignorance is no surprise. But broadcasting it to a bunch of people who don’t care what you think… that was your choice.
