First production line pic
May 20, 2010A plethora of Pandora bellies, stickered up and ready for guts. They don’t have the full assembly team on board yet, but with fifty units set to ship tomorrow they seem to be doing ok so far. EvilDragon, who has been on a business trip to Korea, is due to arrive at Craig’s on Monday with webcam in tow. Ladies and gentlemen, it has well and truly begun.
For those in the 1,000 to 4,000 group, we’re still awaiting confirmation that the remainder of the cases have been ordered. The factory is likely to be getting their instructions from Fatih, who typically gets things done quietly and speaks when they’re done. Stay tuned…
ps. Hope everyone’s ok with this.

first first
Welcome to the club.
Beat me to it ;P Weeiii
If they make 50 a day, mine will be shipped on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday next week. Oh god I’m so excited! And maybe they’ll start getting to making 100 a day once ED gets there and they get more used to the process. Can this finally be happening?
Right now Michael is modding those 700 boards, and I would imagine that is taking time and space to get done. Once he finishes that, they should all be able to focus on assembly only and crank them out fairly quickly. 100 a day should be easy once assembly is the only focus.
Once they hit 100 pandoras/day this is a speed of making 4000 every 2 months…
With the current speed 50 pw is more likely to take 2 years, but how fast you can make a perfect being: one would expect that Craigix would spend at least one hour on each unit testing it by himself…
Right now they apparently are making 50 a week. Though i expect this number to grow considerably.
How are you guys calculating 50 per week? If 50 units are shipping the day after production started then they’re doing somewhat better than that!
Ok, it’s 50 in the first week of production, but that week only really began on Thursday! Be fair
One week after receiving the cases all we see is 50 stickers applied to battery compartments… what I would really wanted to see are the dates when they would have all boards and all cases. And then realistic estimate when they finish.
I can understand why they are saying they will get all parts before they’d need them: as there would be no more delays in production.
There is no way they can finish the whole 4000 batch in 2 months… oh the May bank holiday is coming…
Pandora Cam may replace NASA TV on my workplace desktop for a while…
… or I’ll have them both on and eat my office’s bandwidth alive!
Meh, I’m the IT guy and the only one vaguely computer literate, I’ll just shrug and say our ISP must be having problems…
*gasp* It… It’s you! The BOFH’s PFY!
Since i can´t get to gp32x i have to test the pandori on here!
I will allow this.
You made my day (night actually)
Can you guys set craigix avatar? A green rectangle just vanishes in the crowd.
I don’t think you’ll hear too many complaints on that front. Cheers and congratulations on reaching the home stretch at last!
pandori
How is it that you have neither a profile picture nor some kind of deific moniker next to your posts? Now that I think about it, MW and ED are pretty incognito around here too. Strange since this entire blog is dedicated to you guy’s company.
Anyway, enough rambling. Good job. Congrats!
he hasta make an account for that.
Aye Lad, that would be grand, aye
Go, team Pandora, go!
Oh god. Now we find out that the keyboard is fscked. It’s printing ‘i’ when Craig typed an ‘a’. More delays…
No, you see, it turns out the name “Pandora” is trademarked and the intellectual property owner just made a complaint. Craig & co. therefore decided to change the name to “Pandori”. Unfortunately, this means the case factory will need to slightly adjust their molds. So they’ll lose the first 1,000 cases in their order, but the other 9,000 will be manufactured just as soon as the case factory is able to make the change and send a demo…
Chances are mine should ship on Monday and arrive Tuesday (<210, in UK) – hope it doesn't arrive when i'm out on a meeting – i've been looking forward to hugging the bewildered delivery person for too long!
I’ve got mine coming to work, but now I’m out on site every day! I’ve given strict instructions to call me the moment it arrives. I’ll tell them it’s insulin or something.
LOL…that’s genius!
And you won’t be realy lying on this one gruso
That’s true actually.
NEED BLOOD SUGAR
Unless the postman screws up and delivers you my insulin, and to me your Pandori
I will definitely try not to melt down and inject it into my body ….this time :O
I want to inject Pandora to my body… BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIC PANDORA
Glad mine’s not coming to work. I’ve changed jobs four times since ordering the unit…
Insulin… definitely
Im not even in the first 1000 (i think) and i may soil myself im so excited.
It’s a wonderful sight, you have to pinch yourself sometimes really. Being a bit further back in the queue of course I’m anxious to learn the fate of the other parts. I really hope they can ramp production up. But it’s important to fix those 700 first, so it doesn’t slow things up later.
I’m kinda still wondering if we can request an UNassembled unit, regardless of whether or not it increases delivery time…
NO
Seriously it was discussed to death, no for a million reasons
This has been talked about before, and it looks like the answer is no. The extra effort required to pack the parts carefully could be used to just put the thing together, but even if that were not an issue, there’s the warranty issue. The LCD cables were cited as being particularly fragile:
http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/topic/53433-build-your-own-pandora-kit/
Yes, you can get an unassembled unit. They ship it to you carefully packaged as an assembled unit. You get a screwdriver and disassemble it.
Problem solved.
lol
I have no idea my number but I am excited as well .. keep up the updates it keeps me excited … my wife (not better not say) is happy too.
Didn’t preorder, kicking myself now pretty hard.
You could still get lucky and snare a spot! Email openpandorasales (at) gmail (dot) com and ask Jacquelyn if any are available.
I’m guessing the chances are slim from this point onwards but you might as well throw your hat in the ring.
I have a few friends that will 99% likely buy once they see the thing… I wonder how fast OP will sell out on the second batch once they offer it. I hope they offer after shipping them all… since I’m 2000+ in the queue, I’d be sad if my friends missed out on the preorder just because the 1-1000 folks snatched them all up via referrals.
Ah well. It’ll probably get on slashdot as soon as someone has a final unit and then Pandora will get flooded instantly.
At least I’ll have my first batch unit!
I assume it’s only 50 due to the time it takes to flash the pandora. If flashing is as simple as putting the files on an SD card then I’m sure we are more than happy to do it ourselves. This can only make production faster.
nice photoshopping craigix. XD
I cant believe this is actually happening
Peeps, it’s 50 because only two guys have been doing it, and only for one day. Craig assembled a handful before MWeston arrived which probably makes up part of the 50, but the full assembly process really only started yesterday.
It’s way too early to judge production rates. At the end of next week we should have some real numbers to work with. And we know more hands are on the way to Craig’s.
When assembly gets to full speed how many people will be working to assemble the pandoras.
Walking a mile is not so hard. I can do that.
Walking 4000 miles is very hard. I wouldn’t have the patience.
The OP build process is just as linear as walking one, two, three miles… I wish them courage.
Very well put. We must remember that the OPT are only super-human and not SUPER super-human.
Around 50 in barely 2 days with just two people at the very first try is good going, considering. Even at a minimum of around 50 a day (which would be underestimating by a fair bit when you factor their team of people will double to triple in the next few days and that the process is only going to get naturally faster with the steady increase of efficiency) we can expect at least another 400 to hit come this time next week.
At any rate they’re clearly taking some time and consideration with each one – which is only sensible at this stage, why fall at the final hurdle? – then the magic 1,000 will be reached within a few weeks, even at the current speed. And new apps are appearing every week.
We’re through the looking glass, people…
I have notice dthat in the file archive a SNES emu has been released:
http://dl.openhandhelds.org/
Guess I will be making up an SD card ready for it to come. Any idea on what the filing sysetm should look like?
Yep, Skeezix did a quick port of Snes9x (Dingoo version) so people have SNES on day one. It won’t be the be-all and end-all of SNES, but it will fill the gap until something more optimised like PocketSNES is ported.
As for file system, FAT32 is fine for your SD cards but if you want to dig a little deeper, there is some good discussion in this thread:
http://www.gp32x.com/board/index.php?/topic/53473-sd-card-questions/
Cool, The Dingoo Snes9X was actually pretty good. Come on Pico Drive!
Picodrive is fine as is; I know notaz’s development is between releases, but the one he fielded out to us devs a couple months ago still works fine for the most part; so Picodrive is around, assuming he authorizes it to be released
jeff
So if 50 are going out today around midday, I guess that means some lucky sods might be getting their pandoras on Saturday… (well if you’re in the UK anyway).
I think I’m in the first 200. I doubt one will be be me but if I am i might make a vid if I am able to get off the thing
Not really, Saturday delivery costs extra – so standard next day delivery will mean Monday at the earliest.
I doubt Craig and co will foot the bill for yet more additional costs, as well as causing problems with anyone (like me), who is getting it delivered to a work address.
If it’s sent with Royal Mail, you only have to pay extra for guaranteed Saturday delivery. There is still a very good chance it will arrive on Saturday morning as normal.
In the UK Craig Uses Royal mail Next Day delivery, saturday delivery does not increase the price at all.
“we guarantee delivery by 1pm the next working day… Guaranteed Saturday Delivery is now available as an add-on Special Delivery service for the urgent items you posted on Friday” – costs £2 extra per parcel
GUARANTEE…
you will still sometimes receive items on the Saturday.
Even if you dont pay for Saturday guarantee theres still a good chance it will arrive on Saturday. Atleast thats my experience.
oh its special delivery he uses
yeah, since the pandora is worth £200, I would guess he uses special delivery – standard delivery only covers £41, and also is not trackable.
My GP2X was sent using special. for £7 delivery I would expect special
Um, I can’t remember what postage I paid for, and I’d rather not bother jacqueline who is no doubt very busy – my original order for just the pandora came to £207.20 (UK delivery) – can anyone confirm whether that looks like it includes “express” delivery?
Hello,
This is to confirm your Pandora has been shipped.
If you are in the UK you can look forward to recieving your order in the next 24 hours (weekends not always included), if you chose UPS shipping you should recieve your order in the next 48 hours (weekends not included). Airmail will take 2-12 days.
We want to thank you for sticking with the Pandora project for all this time. We hope you will enjoy the final product. You can head over to gp32x.com to talk on the forums and soon enjoy your Pandora.
Thanks so much,
Craig and the Pandora team.
I so want one of these emails.
gz
What is your order number!!!!
Just kidding, congratz… now off to my email to hit refresh for the next 20-40 days
Me too.
But mine will come soon now………….
I’m Jealous.
ive just got my emailes – yipee. have 2 so will sell on eto the highest bidder on ebay
Or–OR–you can ship it to me, I can review it, ship it back to you, and continue waiting for mine which is invariably, let’s see, 50/day… two months out.
Hope I get mine before July, im roughly 1350 in the q, after that im offsky for a month to pastures warmer. Knowing my luck my pandy will be sent back to OP HQ after 2 delivery attempts whilst im out of the country!
Good news I suppose. I’ll be happy when I hear the first 100 have been finished, posted and have arrived in the wild
I hope to get some updates soon about the process.
how many been done so far ?
“For those in the 1,000 to 4,000 group, we’re still awaiting confirmation that the remainder of the cases have been ordered”
NO KIDDING !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
