Official blog: Official boards, the Bugtracker and more

September 6, 2010
Posted by: gruso

There are no manufacturing updates for today (still waiting on those freshly nubbed boards from Texas), but in the meantime EvilDragon gives us a roundup of the forum situation, and all the links you need for news, bugs, and much needed group hugs.

First things first: I’m sure you remember that I mentioned RedStar and that you should be careful buying from them? (Oops, we didn’t cover that here. Carry on. -Gruso)

Well, seems like they are no scam – as they contacted us and they have in fact three Pandoras preordered. They just never told us they plan to resell them…

One major thing has happened: We now have official Pandora boards!
This caused a lot of confusion and fear of splits at the beginning – but it turned out to be working well.

The wiki wants you!

September 4, 2010
Posted by: foxblock

I don’t think I need to elaborate what a wiki is here, now do I.
Everyone has used wikipedia for (serious) research or uncyclopedia to get some (good) laughs.

Today every thing has its own wiki, be it a popular TV show, a game or just a single person. The Pandora is no different there, but contrary to those other examples the Pandora Wiki has a use and purpose.

http://pandorawiki.org/ or http://wiki.openpandora.de/ (for our German readers) is the page you have to bookmark from now on, unless you already did.

You want a list of all released games (homebrew and ports) for the Pandora up to this date? The wiki can help you! (also nicely sort-able by name or date of release)
You want to know what software or games to expect in the future? No problem!
You are a hardware geek and want to know some specifics to build you own TV-out cable? Here you go!
You just got started learning to code and want to create something awesome for the Pandora, but don’t know how? Yes, please don’t give now!
You don’t really know what you are looking for and just want to browse? Well, okay.
These are just some examples from the front-page, you can find much more when you start following some links!
(NOTE: All the information has to be considered “unofficial” and Open Pandora Ltd. is not responsible for any of the wiki’s content.)

Now, such an information database does not build itself, so like with every other wiki it is up to you to create new articles or corrent and extend old ones.
Just create a new account here: Sign-up page and get started.
Please play by the rules and only add information you deem useful and necessary – don’t troll, we want to get along with each other, don’t we ;)

As a final note: A big THANK YOU goes to all the members of the community investing their free time in the wiki to list the information we need and keeping it up to date.
You guys rock, keep it up!

Chromium gets SSL and cache fix

September 3, 2010
Posted by: gruso

Good news for those using Chromium on the small screen. Of all the browsers available for Pandora, Chromium strikes the best balance of speed and compatibility, but until now has suffered from non-working SSL and caching to the NAND (eep!). A handful of guys have been hacking away at it, and today EvilDragon presents us with two new versions for your testing pleasure.

Chromium 4

This is the same Chromium that was available so far, but it now saves everything in your appdata directory (no caching on the NAND anymore) and also: SSL is now working fine.

Chromium, latest snapshot

This is the latest snapshot version. SSL works, too, saves everything in your appdata directory. Only known problem: Bookmark Manager doesn’t work. You can still use bookmarks, delete and move them around using the right mouse button, but you cannot run the Bookmark Manager.

I also tried a v5 Chromium, but it freezed with some websites.

The next batch of boards

September 3, 2010
Posted by: gruso

Just a quick news snippet on the next lot of boards to arrive from Texas.

Here are some quick news, as Michael had another telephone conference today.

The next completely finished boards with tested nubs will ship out next week, together with 500 more LCD cables for me to solder (then we have about 1700 LCD cables so far).
According to them, they also have started producing more boards, this doesn’t sound too bad either.

Also, they have increased their facility size and got a shiny new machine which should be able to easily do 500 Pandora boards per week – while this is something I first wish to see before I believe it, it would actually be really great if it’s real.

As usual, I’ll keep you updated on any news here.

Hotfix #4 released, nub fix looking good too

August 31, 2010
Posted by: gruso

Hotfix number 4 is live. It’s the usual swag of tweaks large and small, notable inclusions being improved wifi stability and bluetooth connectivity. Full details and download on the official support page (scroll down for the hotfix).

And a bit of news too for those still in the queue:

Just a quick message we got from the Nub company: The new nubs that have been produced and tested last week were already more stable than the ones we had before.
They are doing a bit more tweaking and have new prototypes ready within the next few days that will be tested anew.

We’re getting there. If all goes well, Mass Production for the new nubs can probably start at the beginning of next week :)

Official Pandora forum launched

August 30, 2010
Posted by: gruso

As announced via Twitter last Friday, and heartily discussed all weekend on GP32X, the Pandora now has its own official forum. The new forum is a slimmed down version of the Pandora section at GP32X, and will largely serve as an official support channel and news feed, also catering for the team’s other project, the iControlPad. EvilDragon is administering the new site alongside GP32X, and will ensure that all official news is posted on both sites. For y’all, the usual flow of news (official blog, Twitter, Pandorapress) will remain unchanged, so you don’t need to check yet another source if you don’t want to.

A promising development from the US of A.

Michael had a looong conference call with the board production company today to discuss about how to proceed and speed up production.

Here is a short summary of the results of the discussion with them and the current plans of both us and the company:

Official blog: Nubs ready to be tested! (plus two TV out videos)

August 24, 2010

YouTube Preview Image

EvilDragon is pumping out the new material today, with two new videos and a roundup of the nub situation. The gist of the blog post is that we may be about to see the last of the nub holdups, and a more consistent flow of completed boards out of Texas. Amen to that.

Well, quite a few things have happened, so here is another update for you.

1. All about the nubs

In case you didn’t know yet: Quite a few nubs had problems right from the beginning (a failure rate of 20 – 25% is just inacceptable!) and even some of the working ones have failed a while later (though not too many, thankfully).
