Boards of Canada

MWeston’s Photobucket account has revealed a new picture: the Rev 5a Pandora board. This includes some new solder pads (serial pads near the EXT port, and I2C pads near the wireless chip), and various other thingies.

Update: Never content to leave a question unanswered, pandoratoday.de blogger Screeny dropped Michael Weston a line to ask what this 5th board revision is all about. The reply:

Hi,

There is not much to say. We made 105 rev4 boards. I tweaked a couple things and added a lot more test points, then called it rev5. :)

Rev5 is the paying customer’s board, rev4 [was] for testing and for devs to work with.

Michael

In other words, the thousand(s) we know to be in production already are the same revision that we see here.

The site has been having some comment problems lately. I think it’s a problem with my web host. If your comment doesn’t show up, or appears to have been deleted, we didn’t do it.

Pan3Dora

The Pandora team has released a 3D model of the Pandora. Its innards have been removed (so no CNC for you, sorry), but you can still use it in any 3D program you like.

I’m not talking about Camelot here, but I got a download for you 3D artists out there.

It’s the 3D model of the Pandora. It comes in various parts in STL format (you can easily import it into Blender or most other 3D programs).

The parts are: Bottom, Top, Keys, Stylus, Battery Lid, Dummy Battery.

What can you do with it?

Well, you can use it to take a closer look at the Pandora or to create your own nice renderings.

You can NOT use it to create your own case. The inside of the case has been removed, so while this doesn’t affect any renderings, it’s not usable for any CNC machines.

Feel free to post your renderings to the boards :)

Enjoy!     (EvilDragon, on the official blog)

Download it here. Sorry, MWeston has asked me to remove the link because the 3D files are still useful for manufacturers, and they could make their own Shamdora with just the outsides. Sorry :P

MWeston has given us a pair of videos. In the first, the D-Pad is demonstrated with the Street Fighter (or vice versa, depending on your point of view).

In the second, Quake II is demonstrated using both nubs (and a downclock to 500mhz).

The first images of the final Pandora cases have arrived. More will be posted as they appear. Click for embiggened size.

Unfortunately, this is not quite how the final Pandoras will look:

The finish on this small run cannot be as good as the finish on the 4000 run. I don’t know why.

You get a sort of oily effect on small runs. But it does not effect the actual structure of the parts or the feel of them. The MP run will be a matte finish.

Craig has posted new photos of the parts from the Pandora test injection. Keep in mind that these are test parts, and so aren’t as shiny as the final parts. Here you see the top of the Pandora’s case, with holes for everything. Read more for more photos.

Recently posted to MWeston’s Photobucket account were these renders of the planned labels to be printed onto the Pandora cases. Highlights include a snazzy “First Batch” text and a Pandora logo. Rear labels after the break. Read the rest of this entry ?

Voyager_shield

ED has posted another post on the official blog:

Well, Michael has already begun to wrap up one of those LCD cables in a nice shield. Those foils are REALLY thin, so there’s nothing we need to change with the case. It’s an easy fix.

The other thing you might want to know is that we placed our order for the production of those 3895 boards. Yep, mass production of the motherboards has started!

Now all that’s left to do is wait for the chinese company to finish the moulds. Yeeha!

Good news all around!
