EvilDragon presents EvilDragon at CeBIT! Sadly there is no English version, but it’s surprisingly watchable as it is. ED appears to speak German quite fluently too, good for him. Tidbits of translation can be found in the forum link below.

If you’re not in Europe you may need a reminder that CeBIT, the largest computer expo in the ‘verse, is currently underway in Germany. A certain Michael Mrozek will be there to host a talk on open handhelds, and there are no prizes for guessing which handheld he’ll have held in his hand. German commerce broadsheet the Handelsblatt interviewed EvilDragon in the leadup to the event, taking the story of Pandora out of the usual geek circles and onto the dry breakfast tables of 140,000 businessmen and beancounters. If you’re heading to CeBIT, EvilDragon will be doing his presentation tomorrow (March 6) on the Linux Hotel Stage, Hall 2, Stand B36 from 12pm to 1pm.

You might have noticed the lack of updates this week. Well, good news! There aren’t any now either. The case moulds are reportedly going smoothly, and all we can really do is wait for them to finish. But a quiet blog is a cold, dark hell, so a little forum trawling was in order. Below are some questions, answers and pieces of banter from the last week on GP32X. Consume slowly. You need to conserve your strength.

Bosbeetle: “…how is the mould for the case coming along? Did the guys at the factory already run into some problems or is it still going smooth?”

EvilDragon: “Didn’t get any reports on problems from the company (that’s why they reviewed it before doing it, I guess )

So still coming along smoothly.”

Vorporeal: “Don’t get too comfy yet and jinx everything!”

EvilDragon: “Nope, don’t you worry. Though the major things are done, both the case design and the board design is finished. There’s not too much that can go wrong now.

Asmo: “Were the first 100 not being used for extensive testing, supplying Devs etc? Did all that go out the window?”

EvilDragon: “Nope, they’re still at the MP company who are doing extensive burn-in-tests.
But there’s no reason to throw them away when they all pass, is there?”

Asmo: “WiFi and all that sorted, AC supplies and everything?”

EvilDragon: “AC: A PSP AC Plug works fine. The first 100 don’t need to necessarily be delivered the same AC Adaptors as the [rest].
WiFi: No, not yet. DJWillis is also waiting for the final unit But the firmware can be updated.”

Lingenfr: “While We Are Waiting Can We Get Some Pics Of The Accessories?”

Craigix: “You should be seeing the TV cables next week when they arrive, it’s possible we will get some photos of those from that factory sooner as they seem more willing when it comes to taking cameras on to the factory floor.”

Phawx: “…is the wifi the only thing that needs to be finished to have a fully working Pandora?”

Craigix: “The wifi has been working in various forms for months, but it’s just wrapping it in to something which people expect which is the hard work.”

Enverex: “Craig, can I tac things onto my order before the Pandora ships? Only reason I say that is because I’d want to know what the case is like before ordering.”

Craigix: “Yes, the good news is that you might be able to do that via credit/debit card once we start shipping the first 100 or so.”

Andrewe1 has been hard at work on his embroidery machine making some very nice Pandora and Wiz softcases. He plans to sell some in small quantities, assuming he gets permission from GPH and the Pandora team.

These are just prototypes he whipped up in a day, and he’s looking for input, so post in that thread (source link) if you’ve got any ideas!

After 2 long weeks GP32X.com is back with a bunch of fancy new features. It’s lightning fast at the moment, but might not stay that way as more people begin to come back.

OSNews Coverage – Why do they insist it’s the design team that’s posted the video and suggested the release date?

Currently, the team estimates the release date to be somewhere around April 7th, 2009.

Though the current build is still missing its internal components, the team ensures those awaiting the device that the project is coming together and has posted an “unofficial estimated” launch date of April 7.

Are there any more that people know about?

There’s a half page article on the Pandora in this month’s issue of ‘gamedeveloper’. The article just gives a bit of an overview on what it’s about, some history, and specs. Good to see some more publicity, I expect we’ll see a lot in the coming months.

The crappy quality is caused by the iSight, not the DLP

Presenter : I do not know linux that well, I’ve only learned it for a short time.
Presenter : Sorry for the loudness of the video, I didn’t create it, hence I have no control over it.
Presenter : This video was created as a concept to the actual equipment, it’s created with a similar size to the DS.
Presenter : A machine that can surf the net and play video game, what kind of emotion one can assume it will invoke? (More a statement than a question.)
The presenter talked about how the Pandora came about. Mentioned that the team at Pandora played with several hand-helds and wondered how they can combine a computer (this term is very generic in Chinese, it does not necessary mean a desktop, it can mean a laptop) with a gaming device.
Comparing the DS with a prototype Pandora, Presenter says the width and length is about the same, but the thickness is much greater for the Pandora, however, if compared to a notebook, it is still a good size.
Presenter : Only an initial batch is available to developers
Presenter : I saw Doom running very smoothly.
Mumbling about some script and flash with the audience, really couldn’t hear it and understand it because of the loud music.
Presenter : If people (the audience) are interested, let’s get together and order it in a batch and maybe we can get a discount. Currently, we already have 3 people commited in purchasing it in the next batch. (They either didn’t know there will be some left over from the first batch or maybe they want to wait for the 2nd batch.)
Some one asked about the price, and the Presenter says $330. Obviously they aren’t aware of the RAM upgrade and the price increase to $340.

If you haven’t looked at the Pandora Emulator Frontend thread yet it is well worth a read. This looks like it is making good progress at the moment.

Eniko started a thread about Pixel Scaling and Licences, a dilemma regarding her attempts to create an MMO that might generate income. As it needs to use GPLed software and avoid bots, she seeks to find a solution. to all!
