Banner for the rebirth competition
Update:
All developers get an extra month to brew up something awesome:

Okay, [deadline] extended until end of March.

Source

Also erico and quatercast have been working hard on a banner (top image) and all sorts of other graphics for the competition, which you can check out here – this is not officially approved yet, though.

Meanwhile this topic is to collect ideas/wishes for software you want to see from the competition.

Original post:
It’s ON!
EvilDragon just announced an official OpenPandora software competition with the first price being a new and shiny Pandora right off the prototype production run in a unique golden or pearl-white case (photos to be uploaded soon).
Everything is good in this competition, may it be an original game, a port, new software, ported software, an emulator, a whole OS or a digitalized unicorn spreading love and peace, as long as it follows the rules posted by EvilDragon (see below).
You can enter alone or as a team, but hurry, the deadline is the 29th of February! That is not as much time as it might seem now, so better get started immediately!

If you are good friends with pixels, listen up as EvilDragon is looking for someone to create a nice banner and splash screen for the submissions. Head to the forum thread for more details.

Here is the full quote with all prices and rules (read them if you are considering submitting anything):

I'm going to FOSDEM, the Free and Open Source Software Developers' European Meeting
In case Replay Expo was not near you, there is another opportunity coming up to meet the team behind OpenPandora (okay, so far only EvilDragon): The Free And Open-Source Software Developers’ European Meeting or FOSDEM in short.
It will take place in Brussels, Belgium on the 4th and 5th of February.
EvilDragon will hold a talk about the Pandora on Sunday the 5th (12:40 to 13:25) and you will also have the opportunity to meet Ivanovic and several other people of the Wesnoth and Frogatto development team in the Hackers Room.
Several other community members will surely be there, too (the crowd is just gathering).

More details here:

Posted by: Kloplop321

Arora Rift
Milkshake has brought something to the pandora that has been aspired by quite a few for a while, which is to have commercial games.
Note: All the funds go to the publisher, no one, not OpenPandora GmbH, Ltd. or Milkshake gets any of the funds, it all goes to the developer. Except the cut that Paypal takes out for their services.

The first commercial title is also available already: Arora Rift 32X

The RIOT is over

July 25, 2011

Pandora version of the splashcreen used in the RIOT homebrew competition
and the winners have been announced. Uni took the time to present it in a nice video form, which you can watch by clicking the link below (not embedded to prevent spoilers)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELvpSoZI9IE

For our German readers we have bad news as GEMA struck once again and took the video down due to a shady copyright claim, but you can download the video from here.

Congratulations to the six winning games.

Four of those games (including the winning title) are already available for the Pandora and with the OpenPandora community taking almost 30% of the votes and the Pandora also ranking as one of the top used consoles (more numbers here) we hope to see at least the other two top scoring games being ported over soon.

Discussion about the results is going on here, here and here.
If you somehow missed the entire thing and are now interested in playing some of these games, you can download them all here (also watch the forums for updates).

We hope you have enjoyed this competition and the devs had fun making the games. Hopefully the unfinished projects will still be done – submitting comments, critique or praise in extremely helpful to keep the developers going, so check out the respective development threads.

Thanks go to Uni for organizing, the donators for showing their appreciation and getting a nice amount of money together, the sponsors for topping it off with some nice hardware and last but not least the developers and players for filling the competition with life.

Read more for the winning titles in text form (if you can’t or don’t want to watch the video):

Game of the Week #6 – RIOT competition week

July 14, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

Pandora version of the splashcreen used in the RIOT homebrew competition
This week we take a small break from our regular schedule to introduce you to the entries submitted in the RIOT digital tag team homebrew competition.
We already covered the competition quite elaborately and now after the submission time has passed last Sunday it’s finally time to play all of the submitted games and vote on them.
Head over to the RIOT Digital website to take a look: Entries page (tick the check-boxes at the top to reveal games for your platform).
After you played them, also don’t forget to vote and tell your friends about this and get them to vote, too. After all it’s about 1000€ worth of prizes, so make sure the best team wins.

Granted not all entries are available for the Pandora, but most are and the rest are mostly covered by PC builds or your favourite GPH handheld.

You have until next Friday, the 22nd of July 2011 to vote, which is about a week time and more than enough to test-play each of the entries – just don’t get lost playing Puzzletube ;)

Have fun and if you like you can also take your feedback to the forums.

The Retrode

June 29, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

Logo of the Retrode project
Yes, I know we are late on the subject, but better late then never, right? …right? Sorry about that.

Anyway, as you may have noticed the Pandora kind of is used to emulate old games so you can play your SNES classics on the go.
Now there is no way you can plug in your cartridges directly into the Pandora so you make use of binary versions of the games – files created by a machine which basically just reads the data out of a game cartridge bit by bit.
Few people own those machines as they are hard to get your hands on and/or quite expensive – you just download “roms” from the internet.
This is the source of a problem as that act can be considered illegal in certain countries (even if you own the original game).

Introducing the Retrode or rather the Retrode2, which is a small USB-device you can plug in cartridges for certain consoles and read the rom-data directly into your PC or Pandora, legally!

RIOT Extension and a Baby

June 21, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

While the deadline on the RIOT homebrew competition is getting closer it might be worth taking a look at… or wait, is it?
In fact, the deadline has been extended by another two weeks, so teams now have until the 10th of July 2011 to finish their projects and get some additional polish on.

If you just heard of this competition or have not started working on anything yet, you still have about 3 weeks time left, which is more than enough if you hit the turbo.
Find yourself a team partner (here, here or on IRC) and get rolling.

The prize-pool also hit 400€ in cash and several sponsors have thrown in some swag (like CAANOOs, DINGOOs and some SD cards sponsored by our very own OpenPandora) to make a total of over 1000€!
Check out the sponsors and distribution of prizes here – the first six teams will be honoured.
You can still donate, of course (all money goes straight to the winning developers).

You can stay up to date with the competition and read more news on the blog.

Also on behalf of the team at PandoraPress I want to congratulate PokeParadox on becoming a father as he just had a healthy baby boy. :)

[update] Arch Linux on the Pandora

June 6, 2011

PlugApps_pandora really
Wejp has produced a new install image which makes installation of Arch Linux on to your Pandora that much easier. Also, it is now compressed with bzip2 which makes it possible to do the installation from the Pandora itself.
