Not allowing the dust to settle, super!

June 2, 2011
Posted by: may88

Wermy has been busy little alien with the release of Super Geometry Dust (working title) a few weeks ago.   Sorry for not reporting this earlier but it’s been rather busy here lately. :P

As the working title suggests the game play is somewhere between Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD. Like a medieval pontiff, your little geometric chappy stays put in centre of the screen whilst everything rotates about you. Dodge and blast your way through differing enemies, with a homage to asteroids chucked in for good measure.

Mid-Week Recap

May 26, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

Bullet-points, gotta love them:

benced created a link-shortener for the Pandora community called pnd.to. It has a web-interface as well as an API, so you can make automated use of the service.
A link-shortener creates, as the name suggests, a very short redirect-link, usually below 20 characters long. It is very useful for services like Twitter or the comment section on the repo which have a limited message length. Here is one to this article for example: http://pnd.to/ZkY
Discuss here

In case you have not noticed, Jumanji and Midori have seen an update and now also feature Flash support.
Check the update on our old article for more details.

Yoshi made some very useful emulator fact sheets containing information like SD card layout, required files, button layouts and more.
If you had trouble getting started with emulators, this is the resource you have been waiting for.

Douglas Heaven (called strawbilly on the forum) wrote a very nice article about the Pandora over at the online gamer magazine and site The Escapist.
It mainly includes parts of an interview with EvilDragon he did and mentions the features, strong community support and production problems.
Overall a a well researched article highlighting the real strengths of the Pandora and not focussing on the technical aspects only.

Arch Linux on the Pandora.

May 21, 2011
Posted by: may88 with guidance from foxblock

PlugApps_pandora really
Worthy of mention, gp32x’s wejp has ported Arch Linux to the Pandora.

Arch Linux is a distro with the ethos of keeping it simple, pure and modern. Find out what Arch Linux is all about here.

The two main issues with getting Arch Linux running on the Pandora are, 1) Arch is compiled for i686/x86_64 and 2) it’s a bit fiddly for the average user.

To the rescue is PlugApps. Sounding more like something you might add to your browser, it is in fact a port of Arch Linux to ARM and a full distro in its own right. Intended for the likes of the SheevaPlug and associated hardware until, that is, wejp has done the necessary to produce an alternative OS, complete with GUI and some Pandora specific tinkering.

One advantage of running an OS from the SD card is that you can use the integrated package-manager. Arch Linux has a particularly nice one called pacman. Also this OS is based on a more recent version of the Linux kernel and will have more up-to-date packages, which brings its own merits, but the flip-side of this is that you are likely to run into dependency issues with some PNDs. Go to the forum page for more details on this.

wejp is currently working on bringing the automated PND support (what you are used to from Ångström) to Arch as well as his own music player GMU while other users have been busy porting various programs, a list of which you can find in this (German) thread.

Whilst porting PlugApps Linux on the Pandora is a guru activity, installing it on to a SD card is not.  To get started read wejp’s blog for the download link and instructions. For now, you will also need to update the kernel to avoid a keyboard bug. Follow these simple instructions.  An updated image is planned for release in the near future, which will make installation that much easier.

To keep up-to-date or to ask any questions about wejp’s PlugApps port then follow this gp32x topic.

[I welcome may88, a new member of Team-PandoraPress, who will present you some general Pandora news from now on.
On that note I recall that I never gave kloplop321 an introduction, for which I apologize. Also a big welcome to him, who we will be seeing more Pandora related videos from. --foxblock]

X-Stylus needs a last push [Update]

May 20, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

Update:
The XStylus Crystal
The project has nearly reached its goal with $6,787 in the bank and 10 days left on the clock. Thanks to everyone who has donated!
This was a reason for Elton to post an update in which he presented a new colour scheme for the XStylus – a completely transparent one, called XStylus Crystal (it looks gorgeous).
However there is a catch as this new model cannot be produced with the budget of $7000, but it certainly would be possible with a total of $7850 and to make things more interesting for you he is adding a XStylus Crystal on top of your “User’s option” (or above) perk if the total amount of $7850 should be donated before the deadline.
Check out the update (and pictures) here and adjust your donation amount or order another pack: IndieGoGo
On that page also is a link to a new review by 3dsbuzz rating the XStylus 9.5 out of 10, congrats.
To everyone worrying when the promised styli are being shipped: It probably won’t take as long as the Pandora as Elton already signed the contracts with the factory to start production.

EXT Connectors have arrived

May 18, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

Not at Craig’s production line though, but at community member WizardStan’s home.

Let’s start at the beginning. As you may have noticed the Pandora has some strange port at the back in which none of your regular cables will fit.
That is the so-called EXT port, which has many different functions, TV-out and serial access for example.
Sadly the plug used is no common one and therefore you could not just go out and buy one, but instead had to order it from the manufacturer directly… in batches of 2200 pieces.

Riot is a Synonym for Homebrew

April 17, 2011
Posted by: foxblock

RIOT digital logo
…well at least now it is, as u9i kicked off a new coding competition just after the last one is over and you thought you finally had a few days to relax.
No sir! Fire up your favourite code editor or IDE, blow the dust off K&R and get started.

But wait, there is a catch. For this competition you are required to work in a team of at least two people, so head over to the gp32x.com job office or just ask the guy in the comments above you.
This has been included to get some cross-community, cross-platform and cross-profession collaboration.

Apart from the fact that you have to create a new game, there are no other major restrictions, you will be free to decide the setting, genre and style of your game, may it be a platformer, puzzle, shoot-em-up or toaster-selling simulation in space.

100 EUR have already been donated by u9i, but you are invited to donate more on the website.

The submission deadline is on the 25th of June 2011, 23:59GMT, so there is almost 70 days for you to get your game ready.

After that you will be able to vote for your favourite entries and the overall winner (common for all platforms) will be announced a few days later.

For more information visit the mentioned website.
Discussion is going on here, here, here and in a lot of other places.

Congratulations to all winners and thanks to all participants for making this such a great event and giving the community more gems to play.
Also huge thanks to richiz for organizing this event and to all donators for giving cash or item prizes!

You can find my (and many by others in the same thread) in-depth review here and part 2 of it here – keep in mind it is aimed at developers and therefore extra-critical.

Express your gratitude or hatred about the quality of the games in this end-of-contest thread.

Got Game? A dash of platformers begs for your judgement

Entries for the Pandora Homebew Homebrew Platforming Competition are in. A total of seven entries made the deadline, and they paint a fairly diverse picture of the sidescrolling/platforming genre. The entries:
