Panorama: A new launcher, if you dare

“I have the need for tools that solve my problem in a very specific way … when I don’t find such tools, I make them myself.”

Such is the philosophy of David Flemström (aka Dflemstr), and a slick new launcher called Panorama is the result. Whipped up in his sleep using C++ and Qt 4.6.1, this powerful alternative to Pmenu is shown above in just one possible incarnation. Other Panorama modes shown off so far include “Pmenu mode“, the magnificent Magma theme, and a special treat for the mega-minimalists out there.

PXML validation tool for Pandora apps

December 1, 2009

pxml.validator.screen

Developers, developers, developers, lend us your attention spans. By now you should be well familiar with the concept of Pandora’s .PND packaging system, which automatically populates the menu with icons when an SD is inserted. To play a part in this sciencemagic, your app must include a valid PXML file. And to make a valid PXML file, you’ll need to read and understand the PXML specification in full – then not mess it up. We live in the real world though, where not everyone reads specs, or they just make mistakes. Sensing a compatibility nightmare on the horizon, defacto PXML ambassador Dflemstr has cooked up a handy little validation tool to help keep the ants out of your .PNDs. If you’re a prospective Pandora developer, you’ll need not one, not two, but all three of these links:

Space RTS has momentum, still needs more you

These game developer types, I tell you. While we’re patiently waiting for updates on the as-yet-unnamed Space RTS, Keaft and his merry band of resource miners are sitting around playing board games. Which might sound a lot like procrastination, were it not a board game they’d created themselves to help flesh out their Pandora-bound RTS. Between these lounge room sessions and the 3D renders being produced by Kaze0110 (pics above, video after break), the project certainly seems to have kicked it up a notch or two. Now with a sharper focus on project requirements, Keaft is once again putting the call out to y’all:

Now that we are coming to the close of new ideas, we need your help. We have a lot of solid stuff here, but we are going to need people that can program under the administration of dflemstr. We are going to need some artists under the direction of Kaze0110 should he want help. We are going to need an Audio Technician/Composer (used to have one, but his computer died). Any help that the community can contribute will be greatly appreciated and bring us one step closer to an awesome game.

New Space RTS forums have been set up, and you’re invited to sign up and get involved. (That’s probably one place you’ll want to be come beta time, wink wink). Discussion will remain active on GP32X of course, along with the project wiki.

Upcoming space strategy game wants to know what you want

May 7, 2009

Community member Keaft has a grand plan in the works: an ambitious space-based real time strategy game, with all the trimmings of a bought one. But open source, of course. Right now he’s gathering resources, with some concept art flowing in (on the can’t-view-it-right-now GP32X boards) and code man Dflemstr expressing his intention to string the ones and zeroes together. Now, future Pandora owners are being invited contribute their own ideas to the game design. Keaft says:

I have a huge favor to ask of all the people that love RTS’. Would you head over to Space Rts wiki and take a look at all the pages except “compilation of ideas” and “License” and pm me what you like, what you don’t like, what you would add, and what you would subtract. I want to ensure that this RTS will be noteworthy. I will arbitrarily filter all the ideas and put them past my people to make this worth playing again and again. Happy criticism people!!!
