Homebrew. What does the word conjure for you? Novice coders? Quality indie releases? Free stuff? Community? Any of these answers would be correct. Sometimes awesome, sometimes hilariously crap, homebrew is a petri dish of dedication, obsession, and talent, and the GP32X scene has the entire spectrum covered. So let’s take a look at some of the stuff being cooked up under our own roof.

It's a bird… it's a balloon… it's… Lerp!

Meet Lerp, the namesake and purple protagonist of the upcoming platform-slash-puzzle game from benjymous. Lerp is able to morph into objects he finds, to help him complete each level. Even at this early stage of development (benjymous is quick to point out that most of the graphics are placeholders), Lerp is looking well addictive.

PandoraPanic! (The game, not that other thing you're doing)

January 19, 2009

PandoraPanic! ...the community game

While the sky falls around us (/end sarcastic melodrama), many attention-worthy projects continue to flourish in the back rooms of the community. One such project, captained by scene stalwart PokeParadox, is a WarioWare-style affair called PandoraPanic! in which short, fast minigames are strung together for button mashing bedlam. It’s a true community effort, with all minigames contributed by forum members.

More is merrier when it comes to minigames, so if you’re a coder and you’d like to contribute, jump into the developer discussion and make yourself known. PandoraPanic! is slated for release when the first Pandoras ship.

PandoraPanic: The only form of panic officially endorsed by the unofficial blog.

Update: Latest WIP video from PokeParadox added, after the jump.

Galactic Artifact

January 9, 2009

Trevor Bradley has been working on an impressive looking game for the Pandora. He describes it as a noncombat, real time space exploration game. The goal of the game is to find a hidden prize artifact in a galaxy of 40,000,000 stars, which is divided into 10,000,000 sectors of space before your friend does. Sound impossible? Well, apparently it isn’t. You explore the various sections of space looking for different artifacts, then selling them to aliens who will either give you cash to upgrade your ship, or information about the location of the prize artifact. As you collect this information, you rule out large sections of space until you’re left with a small area to easily find the prize.
Currently, he’s trying to clean up the code enough so it’ll run at a decent frame rate on the Pandora, however if he’s unable to he says he might just release it for the PC. Either way, this will be a very cool game!

More pics after the break.

UPDATE: You can now download a pre-alpha binary from here (Windows/Linux)
Note: This is not a complete version, so expect some bugs. Also, Trevor would like to keep this within the community, so don’t redistribute it. Be sure to read his post before you download.

SuperLumenal

January 1, 2009

Adventus has been working on a game called SuperLumenal. He hasn’t worked out all the details, but the basic idea of the game is to use enemies as human shields and weapons against other enemies. Still work to be done but it sounds like it’ll be a great game!
