Photo: Final keymat

February 5, 2010

From the bucket of Weston.

Update: EvilDragon elaborates on the official blog. A little.

Wow. Actually, there’s something that happened earlier than expected: The cases did arrive, including the final keymats.

Here’s a picture of the final keymat. Now please give Michael some time to thoroughly test everything out.

Update 2: Mr Weston will be putting together some photos (and hopefully a video) later today, detailing what went right and what went not-so-right with this batch of cases. At the time of writing this, it’s some time before dawn in his neck of the woods, so the next few hours will probably a waste of your F5 miles. Sit tight.

We’re a little behind the official blog on this one, but hey, sometimes they deserve the scoop. The latest item in the parade of mass production samples to MWeston’s door is this here keymat, bearing its final font and key mappings. The action is said to be nice, but just a teeny bit rigid – so the 4,000 final units will be around 20% softer, for those extended sessions of d-pad abuse. As far as the eyeball goes though, this is it. Hit up the keymat thread for a closer look.

A couple of renders, a couple of weeks

September 18, 2009

Once again, a fairly slow news week book-ended by a few signs of life. It’s not all great news up in this post, but it’s not that horrid either. First up are a couple of nice new renders from Evildragon. You’ve probably met your dietary intake requirement for renders by now, but a couple more can’t hurt. Especially when they show off some details that more than a few people have been hanging on. Up top is the keymat, showing the final font and (some of) the final layout. At bottom is the revised Pandora base, showing more secure battery clips and other minor refinements.

New keymat photo. The only way is up.

From the depths of MWeston’s bucket comes this shiny new photo. At first glance it doesn’t look that new, just a glossy keypad peering out from an old FDM prototype case. There are important tweaks underneath though. Compare it to the last one we saw, and you’ll see that they keys now sit higher in the case. The membrane tweaks apply to both the QWERTY section and gaming controls. Note that this isn’t a font or character map update (MW heads this off at the pass by noting the “non-final silk screening”).

MWeston talks cases & keymats

April 10, 2009

If you read EvilDragon’s recent interview, you might have had some questions about exactly where we’re at with the case design. MWeston droppped into the forums to fill in some of the blanks.

New CNC’d cases should be done in a couple of days if the predicted build time is still accurate. I’m trying to get my own UPS account set up so we don’t have to play “musical chairs” with the shipping anymore. That will probably shave a week off of delivery time if these things can come right to me!

By the way, these ones will be clear so that I can monitor the hinge action, cable rotation and the fit of components inside while the whole thing is together. :)

What is this we spy on the official site? Another item off the list! Many will miss the heated, obssessive key layout debates. Many, many more won’t.

  • CNC prototype Done!
  • Completion of factory mould for keymat
  • Finalise keyboard layout Done!
  • Completion of factory mould for case
  • CE/FCC testing
  • Mass production test run
  • Stability testing
  • Arrival of last bits and pieces for production
  • Commence mass production
  • Commence final testing
  • Start shipping

The keymat design has left the building

    February 5, 2009

Word came in from Chip today that the “keymat is finalized and the manufacturer is already making up the molds for mass production.” The team is no doubt happy to have one less pressing issue on the table… cough.
