A loong official blog post from EvilDragon.
Long time no blog post – and a lot has happened, really!
First, let’s start with some OS development.
The OS is getting better and better. We will probably add another minimal menu, similar to gmenu2x with no fancy effects and graphics but PND-Support.
This is for all the purists of you.
Also, notaz and DJWillis are slowly stepping forward in getting WiFi working.
While it’s not perfect, the packet loss is decreasing and things are getting better.
It might still be a long way (or it might be finished soon, you never know with such things), but it’s improving.

EvilDragon has taken the time to list the great contributions that people have made to the project and some history of it’s birth. Frankly, I can’t say more or add more than what ED has already said:
A big thanks to all of you!
Well, it has been a wild rollercoaster ride. It was fun. It was annoying. It was amazing. It was frightening. It was unique.

The green light shone. The roar went up. The blog went down. And here we sit, pensive in the afterglow. So what happens next? Let’s take a look at what the coming weeks have in store.
We are pushing them to ship us 500 on friday. [...] The factory have already been instructed to get on with it, we should hear something today. We don’t know if they will manage it, but we hope they will. They have told us pretty much every customer makes this week hell for them.

If you needed a reminder that China isn’t the only player in this saga, this is a nice way to get one. MWeston has informed us that 1,000 boards are being populated with components this week in Texas. Also interesting is the impact certain software developers are having on the hardware production process. What, you thought they just sat around porting Quake? (No offence to those who sat around porting Quake. You’re all doing a bang up job.)
It’s worth saying again that Notaz’s work on the kernel is clearly the reason the device is as advanced as it is today. Sure the hardware may have come along fine with minimal testing as the assembler learned how to solder the boards better but Notaz has helped me develop a comprehensive suite of test software that has helped the assembler perfect their process. So good in fact that they have started building a batch of 1000 this week after tweaking their pilot runs.

Notaz has thrown together some tasty comparison images for us. Remember, that the screen on this Pandora is B-grade. This is not a final screen!

It’s been an exhausting week for F5 fingers across the globe, and it’s only Wednesday. What the bloody ‘ell did happen to the cases? EvilDragon doesn’t have all the answers, but he does lift the fog for a moment to give us some insight into the whole China thang. If you’re all cased out for now, skip to the end for some nice OS news.
(Oh, for those concerned about the Pandora case received by Notaz in the previous post, don’t be. That case is the very one that Craig abused horribly for science, hence the various stress fractures. You too can have these cracks in your Pandora, but you’ll have to pay Craig in vodka and funny hats to do the damage for you. Keen?)

Here we have our third independent look at a Pandora, this time from forum dev notaz. This is believed to be the same Pandora that Craig used to stress test the hinge and is also one of the first cases from China.

As Pandora tiptoes its way towards public consumption, EvilDragon delivers a solid state of the nation on all things firmware related, giving first batchers a good idea of what to expect. Things have certainly come a long way, but there will be some beta-ish aspects to the firmware that will continue to be polished as units go out into the wild. Booting is on the slow side for now, and we shouldn’t expect the suspend-to-RAM function to be ready out of the box (see end of article for more on this). On the up side, USB peripherals, wifi, Bluetooth, .pnd recognition, and a first-boot setup wizard are just some of the things that are hot to trot.
