Fresh from taking out second prize in the GP32 Spain GP2X-Wiz Coding Competition, Notaz has now released GINGE for Pandora. GINGE provides a WINE-like compatibility layer enabling you to run many titles from the huge GP2X software library. At the risk of hyperbolising, it’s the best thing ever. Notaz explains that some support for Wiz software is now included, and although not thoroughly tested, it’s capable of running the Wiz release of PCSX4all (more on that below).
Games that won’t run include those that use the second GP2X CPU, such as Vektar and Egoboo. Some other software won’t run for various magical reasons (confirmed not working after some quick tests: B’lox, Cat Trap, Sleuth Slots, Simoniz). Touch screen is not supported for the moment either, but it’s early days yet. So what IS working? Lots! Here are some titles to get you started:

It seems Notaz has been a busy boy. He’s gotten his dirty chocolate covered hands everywhere, to the point he has somehow made the Pandora run some of the existing GP2X games. I don’t mean he’s ported a bunch more stuff, I mean the Pandora now plays GPE files as they are, including the old menu for an interface. He calls it Ginge.

If your new Pandora has been dogged by low quality or crackly audio, you may feel better knowing that a handful of others are having the same problem. Feeling better yet? Oh. Well you’ll definitely feel better in about 5 minutes, because Notaz has nailed the fix. The cause of the problem is something of a long story, although nothing too unusual in the world of bughunting. You can read the entire saga by starting here, or jump straight to the solution at post #162. This fix will of course make its way into the next official firmware image, and will also be rolled into Hotfix No.3 (due in the next week or so). Thanks Esn for the tip.

Baron of phonebrew (just made that up) Zodttd has popped up on GP32X bearing the gift we’ve been waiting for: PSX4Pandora. Zod has been scarce in the Pandora scene recently, but is making up for lost time with a release and then a string of updates in the space of 24 hours. As with any beta, you can expect the occasional glitch, but there are plenty of refinements to look forward to.

Notaz has gotten all fabulous and treated us to an early release of Picodrive. Here are his words.
This is not what I originally intended to release, but as I figured that my vision is taking ages to materialize I’m releasing what I have. This is built from the latest core code that is capable of 32x and SMS (with lots of internal changes from last Wiz version), but I had to disable 32x/SMS support as they are not really usable (hence the ‘beta’ tag). So current known issues are:

We’re a little late to the party on this official blog post (which went up on Saturday), but today being the Monday in question perhaps the timing isn’t so bad. In addition to some status info on Pandora parts, EvilDragon also gives us a rundown of OS status and what kind of software will be ready to go at launch.
That’s the weight of the packages fully packaged up with painted cases (unless our friends lied to us) – and getting the plane to UK on Monday. Yay!
We’ll probably get a tracking number on Monday (it took two days the last time we got a shipment from China), then we can be sure!

MWeston feeds some banana skins into Mr Fusion and logs the gigawatt hours. Ze text:
Here’s a video showing my ammeter in series with the Pandora battery. I wanted to double check the fuel gauge calibration because with lite settings, 15 hours is being presented. I thought that was crazy, but it’s true. With an average current of 278mA and a battery testing at 4200mAh, that really is 15 hours (under specific settings talked about below of course).

With the wifi issue blown wide open, unseen forces no longer impede our progress. Notaz and Pickle have signed up for the resistance. Soon, we will join them.
Just had some hard time attempting to mod my board. That resistor is really small, see for yourself (my index finger and small screwdriver for comparison)

Finally – a new blog post. Wait, that’s ED’s line.
Finally – a new blog post. Did take a real long time, since there was so much we needed to figure out first.
Okay, here is what happened:
1. The WiFi issue – finally resolved
A lot of guys have probably already followed this on the boards: notaz was working on the WiFi driver and still couldn’t get it to work reliable. As he didn’t know what else to try, he thought it could also be a hardware issue – of course, that got us alarmed. Michael immediately stopped the board production (700 had been produced so far back then) to first do more tests with WiFi. We were totally in the dark. If you ever wanted to know how sudden death feels… well, we do know for sure yet.

A loong official blog post from EvilDragon.
Long time no blog post – and a lot has happened, really!
First, let’s start with some OS development.
The OS is getting better and better. We will probably add another minimal menu, similar to gmenu2x with no fancy effects and graphics but PND-Support.
This is for all the purists of you.
Also, notaz and DJWillis are slowly stepping forward in getting WiFi working.
While it’s not perfect, the packet loss is decreasing and things are getting better.
It might still be a long way (or it might be finished soon, you never know with such things), but it’s improving.
