A loong official blog post from EvilDragon.
Long time no blog post – and a lot has happened, really!
First, let’s start with some OS development.
The OS is getting better and better. We will probably add another minimal menu, similar to gmenu2x with no fancy effects and graphics but PND-Support.
This is for all the purists of you.
Also, notaz and DJWillis are slowly stepping forward in getting WiFi working.
While it’s not perfect, the packet loss is decreasing and things are getting better.
It might still be a long way (or it might be finished soon, you never know with such things), but it’s improving.

As Pandora tiptoes its way towards public consumption, EvilDragon delivers a solid state of the nation on all things firmware related, giving first batchers a good idea of what to expect. Things have certainly come a long way, but there will be some beta-ish aspects to the firmware that will continue to be polished as units go out into the wild. Booting is on the slow side for now, and we shouldn’t expect the suspend-to-RAM function to be ready out of the box (see end of article for more on this). On the up side, USB peripherals, wifi, Bluetooth, .pnd recognition, and a first-boot setup wizard are just some of the things that are hot to trot.

Evil H. Dragon has blogged up a big one. If you’ve been reading PandoraPress you’ll know a lot of this stuff already, but it’s always nice to get a meaty serve of words from Pandora HQ. Images and video have been snipped to conserve pixels; you can find the post in its original form at the source. Oh, want to know what the above pic is all about? Don’t let your raging inner nerd miss the links at the bottom.

If Pandora’s wifi status has been on your mind, this latest snap from MWeston’s album should brighten your day. For the uninitiated, what we’re seeing here is a successful connection handled by the xfce network manager, some terminal output for fun, a blinding flash of light, and… internets! Click to scrutinise.
[edit] Thanks, praise and donations of cool ale go out to DJWillis, who (in the words of Skeezix) has been busting his nuts to make this happen for us, and of course Notaz. Mweston says:
Combined with Notaz’s efforts to help me get more driver code and features into the git so DJ(Willis) can build them into his packages, they are the heart and soul of the kernel development process.

You might have noticed the lack of updates this week. Well, good news! There aren’t any now either. The case moulds are reportedly going smoothly, and all we can really do is wait for them to finish. But a quiet blog is a cold, dark hell, so a little forum trawling was in order. Below are some questions, answers and pieces of banter from the last week on GP32X. Consume slowly. You need to conserve your strength.

It was all devs on deck today, with a little video-fuelled excitement on the boards and a bevy of questions answered. First up, a word from the Dragon.
Well, some quick news (I didn’t have time to do a blog post, as I was in Leipzig at the GCO and needed to catch up on everything).
The 105 boards are finished, though I have no idea whether the MP company did take some pictures or if we have to wait until they arrive at Michaels place.
The review of the case is complete, mould creation started.
The TV Out Cables are being built, as soon as Michael gets the first final one, there will be pictures for sure
WiFi is getting better, everything works except reading the calibration data, the rest is fine. DJWillis is still at it.
And Michael is currently putting the new firmware on all of the nubs… joy

On reading that, the observant Pandorian might be asking why the case mould is starting now, when we previously reported that it started two weeks ago? Just for you, it’s been asked and answered already.

UPS might have the limelight this week, but last week’s hot topic (wifi, for the benefit of your goldfish) still deserves some love. Turns out that ain’t all bad either, as DJWillis tells us below. The first quote is taken from the comments in our previous wifi post. The second comes from the associated thread on GP32X.
… we actually have 2 open source options so I’ll give people a little background.
One is the TI WiLink 4 based ‘partial’ driver that was opened as part of the Google Android G1 release.
This driver is unfortunately a mess and really has no place in a modern system (ancient design architecture, lots of semi-bespoke shims, some really nasty bugs etc.).
We can use this driver if you don’t mind setting it up from one clunky user space app that crashes a lot and lacks solid support for things like WEP/WPA etc. – Really this driver is only of use for hardware validation not real use from users. Even after I hacked in Wireless Extensions support (yep, the driver is THAT old) it’s still not a driver I would want to use (sorry but I hate lots of nasty random mem leaks and errors).
